The Seoul Museum of Craft Art has announced the opening of The 1st Seoul YOOLIZZY Craft Award Winner Exhibition: The Language of the Earth, running from December 20, 2023, to March 16, 2024. This marks the debut of the Seoul YOOLIZZY Craft Award, the first craft award established by the city of Seoul to honor the late artist Yoo Lizzy (1945–2013), a pioneer of modern Korean craft.
The inaugural award recipient is woodcraft artist Kang Seok Geun, whose work will be showcased at the museum’s Show Window Gallery. Kang’s featured series, Earth Series, reinterprets traditional Korean wooden trays (hamji) through a contemporary lens, blending traditional craftsmanship with innovative design.
With 27 years of experience, Kang is a celebrated figure in the craft world. He was a finalist for the prestigious LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize in 2021 and a recipient of the Luxembourg Art Prize. His works reflect a deep connection to nature and traditional Korean woodworking techniques, exploring themes of sustainability and cultural heritage.
The exhibition seeks to highlight the artistic and cultural value of craft, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to engage with works that bridge tradition and modernity. Kang’s Earth Series not only pays homage to Korea’s rich craft traditions but also offers a global perspective on the evolving role of craft in contemporary art.
Kim Soo Jung, Director of the Seoul Museum of Craft Art, emphasized the significance of the exhibition: “We hope this exhibition serves as a meaningful opportunity to rediscover the artistic and cultural value of craft. By celebrating Kang Seok Geun’s work, we aim to inspire greater appreciation for the depth and versatility of Korean craft.”
The Seoul YOOLIZZY Craft Award was established to honor Yoo Lizzy’s contributions to modern Korean craft. Known for her innovative approach to materials and techniques, Yoo’s legacy continues to influence contemporary artisans. This annual award seeks to support and recognize exceptional artists who embody the spirit of creativity and craftsmanship that Yoo championed throughout her career.
The exhibition will be held at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art, offering free admission to the public. Visitors can expect to see a fusion of tradition and innovation, as Kang’s work exemplifies the potential of craft to transcend cultural and temporal boundaries.
