SEOUL — K-pop girl group 2NE1 will headline the halftime show for an upcoming football match in Seoul between Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, organizers announced Monday.
Streaming platform Coupang Play confirmed that the veteran quartet will perform during the halftime of the second match of the annual Coupang Play Series, scheduled for 8 p.m. on August 3 at Seoul World Cup Stadium in western Seoul.
2NE1 made their debut in 2009 and quickly rose to prominence with a string of hit singles. Their second studio album, Crush, debuted at No. 61 on the Billboard 200 in 2014, marking the highest-charting and best-selling K-pop album on the U.S. album chart at the time.
Although the group officially disbanded in November 2016, they reunited for a surprise performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2022. Since then, 2NE1 has embarked on the "Welcome Back Tour," selling out all of their shows across Asia.
The Coupang Play Series will open with Newcastle United facing Team K League — a selection of top players from Korea’s domestic league — on July 30 at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. Girl group IVE has been announced as the halftime act for the opening match.
Tottenham, led by Korean national team captain Son Heung-min, recently claimed the UEFA Europa League title in May. Newcastle United, meanwhile, captured the English Football League Cup. Both clubs are set to unveil their respective trophies prior to the Seoul match, with further details to be announced.
According to Coupang, priority presale tickets — offered to subscribers of the platform’s “Sports Pass” — sold out within 15 minutes last Thursday. General ticket sales will open at 8 p.m. this Friday through the Coupang Play app.
