YG Entertainment is marking its 30th anniversary in 2026, reflecting on a history that helped shape some of K-pop’s most recognizable sounds, images and global milestones.

Founded in 1996, YG built its identity around a distinctive musical language rooted in hip-hop, performance and strong visual branding. Over the past three decades, the company’s artists have repeatedly expanded the scale of K-pop, from domestic digital charts to YouTube records, Billboard rankings and large-scale global fandoms.

In Korea, YG’s chart power became especially visible during the streaming era. BIGBANG established itself as one of the defining groups of modern K-pop, while 2NE1 reshaped the image of girl groups with a sound and attitude that stood apart from conventional idol pop. Later acts including WINNER, iKON, AKMU and BLACKPINK continued the label’s presence across digital charts and public-facing hits.

YG’s influence grew even further as the music industry shifted toward visual platforms. PSY’s “Gangnam Style” became the first YouTube video to surpass 1 billion views, turning a Korean pop song into a global viral phenomenon and changing how the world understood K-pop’s digital reach.

BLACKPINK later pushed that visual era to a new level. The group became one of the most powerful music acts on YouTube, surpassing 100 million subscribers on its official channel and reinforcing K-pop’s position in the global platform economy.

The company’s artists also broke into mainstream Western charts. BIGBANG and 2NE1 helped open early pathways for Korean acts on the Billboard 200, while PSY’s global breakthrough brought Korean-language pop into the center of international attention. BLACKPINK later reached a major milestone when BORN PINK topped the Billboard 200, becoming the first album by a female K-pop act to reach No. 1 on the chart.

YG’s growth has also been tied to the rise of album-driven fandom. BIGBANG helped define the company’s early commercial strength, while BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to record million-selling album sales. In recent years, TREASURE and BABYMONSTER have extended the label’s global strategy, combining performance, digital content and fan-driven album sales.

The anniversary arrives as YG prepares for another active year. According to YG LIFE, the company announced plans for 2026 that include BIGBANG’s 20th-anniversary concerts, expanded activities for TREASURE and BABYMONSTER, and preparations for a new boy group.

YG’s official website currently lists BLACKPINK, BABYMONSTER, TREASURE and WINNER among its major active artists, while recent company updates highlight TREASURE’s Asia tour expansion and BABYMONSTER’s ongoing releases and tour activities.

For YG Entertainment, the 30th anniversary is not only a retrospective moment. It is also a test of how the company will carry its strongest identity — performance-driven music, bold visual style and global fandom strategy — into the next phase of K-pop.

From BIGBANG’s generational impact to BLACKPINK’s platform dominance and BABYMONSTER’s emergence as a new global act, YG’s history shows how K-pop became not only a music genre, but a worldwide visual and cultural system.
