The 24th Songeun Art Award Exhibition will open at the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation on December 17, 2024, showcasing the innovative works of 20 contemporary Korean artists across diverse media. This exhibition marks the conclusion of Songeun’s annual programming and serves as a testament to its enduring mission to discover and support emerging talent in Korean contemporary art.
Established in 2001, the Songeun Art Award has been pivotal in fostering the careers of numerous artists who have since achieved international recognition. Over the years, the award has expanded to reflect the dynamic and evolving nature of the Korean art scene. In its 20th year, the foundation broadened the scope of the exhibition by inviting 20 artists to participate, offering a comprehensive view of current artistic practices in Korea.
The participating artists, including Jamyoung Koo, Yehwan Song, Hyein Lee, and Sangho Noh, represent a wide array of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to installation, video art, and architecture. The exhibition will not only showcase their latest works but also provide insights into the thematic and conceptual concerns shaping contemporary Korean art today.
The final award selection will occur during the exhibition’s run, with one artist receiving the grand prize based on the originality, depth, and cultural significance of their work. This structure fosters engagement between the audience, the art, and the jury, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that defines Songeun’s approach to cultural development.
Songeun’s newly established space, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, adds a layer of architectural brilliance to the exhibition. The Swiss firm’s first project in Korea, this state-of-the-art cultural venue symbolizes Songeun’s commitment to creating an enduring platform for contemporary art. Located in Seoul’s Gangnam district, the building itself has become a landmark, merging innovative design with a dedication to fostering artistic dialogue.
The exhibition not only honors the individual achievements of the participating artists but also underscores the broader role of the Songeun Art and Cultural Foundation in advancing Korea’s presence on the global art stage. By offering a platform for experimentation and expression, Songeun continues to nurture a vibrant and diverse art community.
Open until February 22, 2025, the 24th Songeun Art Award Exhibition invites visitors to experience the breadth of talent within Korea’s contemporary art scene. Admission is free, encouraging art enthusiasts, critics, and the general public to engage with the works and support the next generation of Korean artists.
As Songeun celebrates its 24th Art Award, this exhibition exemplifies its unwavering dedication to supporting artistic excellence and innovation, offering a glimpse into the future of Korean contemporary art.
