SEOUL — The National Theater of Korea and the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History are jointly presenting a special exhibition titled “Performing Arts, Reflecting the Times”, which runs from April 2 to June 15, 2025. The exhibition is held on the third floor of the National Museum in Seoul and is open to the public free of charge.
The exhibit explores how Korea’s performing arts have developed in tandem with the nation’s modern history, capturing the changing spirit of each era. Featuring a wide range of historical materials and artistic displays, the exhibition is divided into two parts.
Part 1: Performing Arts, Breathing with the Times
This section traces the evolution of Korean performing arts throughout the 20th century, a period marked by rapid societal change. With the introduction of Western-style theater and the emergence of modern indoor performance venues, Korean performance culture diversified significantly. The opening of the National Theater in 1950 marked a turning point, fostering national arts organizations that raised the standard of performance in drama, dance, and music. These groups used their works to document social changes and historic moments, serving as both artists and chroniclers of their times.
Part 2: Stage Design, Creating the Performance
While performances take place on stage, much of their power comes from the unseen work behind the scenes. This part of the exhibition showcases the art of stage design — from its early forms to today’s high-tech innovations. As the only theater in Korea with its own full production capabilities, the National Theater has collaborated with artists and technical experts for decades to create visually compelling and meaningful performances. Today, stage design continues to evolve through the integration of advanced technologies, enhancing both emotional impact and artistic expression.
Visitors can view the exhibit daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended evening hours until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. For more information, call 02-3703-9200.
