Seoul's Gangnam District is set to host the 2025 Gangnam-gu Visual Arts Exhibition: Illustration Show from February 24 to March 2 at the Gangnam Medical Tour Center’s second-floor gallery. The exhibition, announced by Gangnam District Mayor Cho Seong Myeong on February 20, aims to foster the local visual arts scene while offering young artists opportunities to showcase their work without the burden of high rental costs.

The exhibition focuses on narrative depth and experimental techniques within the medium of illustration, exploring the intersection of reality and fantasy. By spotlighting illustration as a vital form of visual storytelling, the event underscores the genre's artistic significance and potential for creative exploration.

Five accomplished illustrators—Hwang Dae Yoon, Han Ji Yeon, Jung Ha Na, Jang Seok Woo, and Lee Jun Hee—will present over 30 works. Each artist brings at least five years of professional experience and a minimum of five solo exhibitions, ensuring a diverse and sophisticated collection that reflects the evolving landscape of contemporary illustration.

The selection of works showcases a variety of styles and themes, from surreal dreamscapes to intricate depictions of urban life. The exhibition invites viewers to consider illustration not merely as commercial art but as a powerful medium for artistic expression that bridges the gap between fine art and visual communication.

This initiative also aligns with Gangnam District’s broader commitment to supporting emerging artists. By providing accessible exhibition spaces and reducing financial barriers, the district seeks to cultivate a more inclusive and dynamic cultural ecosystem. In addition to this illustration show, the district plans to expand its visual arts programming to include sculpture, painting, video art, and ceramics. A new competition for up-and-coming artists is also slated for launch, aimed at identifying and nurturing fresh talent within the community.

Mayor Cho Seong Myeong emphasized the district's dual identity as both an economic hub and a thriving cultural center. “Gangnam is not just the heart of commerce but also a city where diverse cultural and artistic expressions flourish. This exhibition is part of our ongoing efforts to support local and young artists, enhancing Gangnam’s reputation as a vibrant cultural destination,” he stated.

By integrating visual arts more deeply into the community and promoting young talent, Gangnam District aims to solidify its status as a leading center for both commerce and creativity. The 2025 Visual Arts Exhibition: Illustration Show serves as a stepping stone toward this vision, offering residents and visitors alike an opportunity to engage with Korea’s dynamic art scene.
