Pioneer Works is now accepting applications for its 2025 Visual Arts and Music Residencies after a brief hiatus for construction. The Technology Residency has transitioned to an invite-only format as it evolves.
During the selection process, a jury made up of resident alumni and industry experts will evaluate candidates who showcase exceptional work that challenges the norms of their fields. Pioneer Works is particularly interested in applicants who can effectively utilize its unique facilities and collaborative environment, as well as those engaged in interdisciplinary practices.
Special thanks to Le’Andrea LeSeur (Visual Arts ’23) and Graham Wilson (Swivel Gallery) for serving on the jury for the Visual Arts applications, and to Gelsey Bell (Music ’23) and Lester St. Louis (Music ’23) for jurying the Music applications.
All residents who complete the program will join Pioneer Works' expanding alumni network, gaining access to future opportunities such as teaching positions, partnerships, and other public programs. The application for the Pioneer Works 2025 Open Call will be available from September 3, 2024, at 11 AM until September 30, 2024, at 5 PM. Interested individuals can apply here.
About Pioneer Works
Pioneer Works is a nonprofit cultural center in Red Hook, Brooklyn, led by artists and scientists. It fosters innovative thinking through visual and performing arts, technology, music, and science.
Even before establishing a formal program, residencies have been integral to Pioneer Works' mission. Originally, the founding team proposed the "Museum of the Working Artist," and while that name didn’t stick, the ethos remains. They are committed to providing emerging artists, musicians, and technologists with the space to work, tools to create, and a platform to exchange ideas.
Each September, Pioneer Works selects residents through an open call, aided by a jury of experts and alumni. The center welcomes residents who operate outside traditional models and norms, benefiting from its unique facilities and culture. The institution continuously adapts to reflect the interests and work of each new cohort, offering public education initiatives and events like Second Sundays, a monthly forum for artistic experimentation featuring activations, open studios, and performances.
Residencies at Pioneer Works are partially supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the backing of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts.
