Kyoungyoon, a member of the K-pop boy band DKZ, has announced that he will be taking a hiatus from group activities to focus on his health, following revelations about his parents’ ties to the controversial JMS cult. Dongyo Entertainment, Kyoungyoon’s agency, issued a statement on Wednesday saying that he had been diagnosed with anxiety disorders and social phobia symptoms and was receiving consultations and medical treatment.
The JMS cult, founded by Jeong Myung-seok, has been convicted of raping and sexually exploiting young female followers across the world. The Netflix documentary “In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal,” which was released on March 3, exposed four different religious cult groups, including JMS, and created a stir.
Kyoungyoon’s parents were found to run a café in Yeongdeok County, North Gyeongsang, that was allegedly associated with JMS. In a statement released five days after the documentary was first aired, Dongyo Entertainment said that Kyoungyoon had been unaware of his parents’ ties to the cult and that they had cut off all their ties with the group.
In addition to Kyoungyoon’s hiatus, DKZ has canceled its CulTwo Show schedule in Boseong, South Jeolla on April 29, after receiving continuous civil complaints from local county and National Civil Service. Originally, only Kyoungyoon was not going to attend the show.
