Lee Kun-Yong, one of the most influential figures in the Korean avant-garde movement, also known as painter of bodyscapes, won the Order of Cultural Merit Eungwan yesterday.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) selected 16 recipients of the cultural order, recognizing their contribution for the development of arts.
Lee Kun-Yong continues his provocative practice in diverse media such as performance, video, sculpture and installation. Lee's oeuvre starts from the fundamental questions on the essence of art. His explorations attempt to find this essence and its existence through perpetual experiments with the body and the space where works are exhibited and the relation between the works and the viewer. Also he has signed with Pace Gallery since January.
MCST also recognized eight for Today’s Young Artist Award, including media artist Choi Chan Sook.
The awards ceremony was held yesterday (Oct 21) at National Folk Museum of Korea.
