The highly anticipated Woodstock Music and Art Fair 2023 rock festival, scheduled to make its debut in Korea this month, has been postponed to October, announced the concert organizers on Friday.
Originally set to take place from July 28 to 30 near the scenic Multipurpose Square along the Hantan River in Pocheon, Gyeonggi, the Korean edition of the iconic Woodstock festival aimed to mark its first venture outside the United States.
In a statement, the organizers clarified that the Woodstock festival has been rescheduled to October 7 to 9, with the primary focus on ensuring a safe and successful event. Emphasizing that the festival is being postponed rather than canceled, they expressed their commitment to completing the preparations for an unforgettable experience.
The Woodstock festival had generated immense excitement with its diverse lineup of artists, spanning from legendary Japanese heavy metal icon Loudness of the 1980s to Korean veteran acts such as Insooni, Boohwal, Kim Wan-sun, and Jeon In-kwon, alongside popular K-pop idols Sunmi, Taeyang, Xdinary Heroes, and many others. Earlier announcements had also hinted at the participation of overseas artists Akon, New Hope Club, frederic, and more. However, some fans expressed skepticism as these artists had not updated their Woodstock schedules on their official websites, casting doubts on their involvement.
Since its initial announcement in January, the Woodstock festival has faced a series of challenges and controversies. Reusing the iconic Woodstock name, known for the 1969 festival's legendary status, subsequent iterations in 1994, 1999, and 2009 were met with mixed success and controversies.
Criticism surrounding the Korean edition of the festival has revolved around the venue, unclear lineup announcements, and high ticket prices. Fans voiced their concerns regarding the 400,000 won ($310) price tag for a three-day ticket, leading to the organizers taking note of the feedback. As a response, they recently announced a significant reduction in ticket prices, setting the three-day pass at 150,000 won.
Despite the hurdles faced along the way, the Woodstock festival organizers remain determined to deliver an exceptional event that will captivate fans and leave a lasting impact. The rescheduled festival promises to showcase a fusion of music and art, immersing attendees in a unique cultural experience that pays homage to the spirit of the original Woodstock festival.
