Korean Music Performers See Dramatic 193% Jump in International Royalty Earnings

Sayart / Dec 5, 2025

South Korea's music performers are experiencing an unprecedented windfall from international royalties, with earnings jumping nearly 200% in a single year as K-pop's global influence continues to expand beyond just major labels and headline stars. The surge highlights how the Korean Wave is now benefiting performers who traditionally worked behind the scenes, from session musicians to backup vocalists.

According to data released on December 4 by South Korea's Federation of Music Performers, the organization's overseas neighboring rights collections reached 1.34 billion won ($910,000) this year, representing a staggering 193% increase from last year's 460 million won. This dramatic jump underscores the accelerating global popularity of K-pop and Korean music across international markets.

Neighboring rights represent a specialized form of intellectual property protection that covers performances and recordings, working alongside traditional copyright protections for musical compositions. These rights ensure that performers receive compensation when their work is broadcast, streamed, or otherwise distributed commercially, even when they are not the primary artists or songwriters.

The massive increase in royalty collections stems primarily from a groundbreaking mutual management agreement established last year between the Korean Federation and SoundExchange, the leading U.S.-based collective rights management organization. SoundExchange specializes in collecting digital performance royalties on behalf of performers and rights holders across America's vast digital music landscape. This partnership alone generated approximately 900 million won in additional performance royalties that were successfully collected and distributed to Korean performers.

Over the past twelve months, both organizations have collaborated intensively to build a sophisticated settlement infrastructure capable of matching usage information and digital reporting data across international borders. This technical achievement represents a significant breakthrough in cross-border royalty management, enabling seamless tracking and distribution of earnings from multiple platforms and services.

The new partnership framework now allows royalties generated through major U.S. digital platforms, including satellite radio services, webcasting platforms, and various other digital audio streaming services, to be efficiently transferred to Korea and distributed directly to eligible Korean performers. This streamlined process ensures that Korean artists receive fair compensation for their contributions to the global music ecosystem, regardless of where their music is consumed.
