Studio8 Architects has successfully transformed three traditional 16th-century trulli buildings in Italy's Puglia region into a stunning contemporary holiday residence called Trullo Mita. Located in the picturesque Valle d'Itria within a centuries-old olive grove, the project masterfully combines historic preservation with modern living amenities, including the addition of a swimming pool and updated interior spaces.
The original site featured three weathered trulli structures with their characteristic white stone walls and distinctive conical limestone roofs, along with a stone house that was added approximately one hundred years ago. These trulli buildings, dating back to the 16th century, represent a central element of the region's architectural heritage and cultural identity. The structures had deteriorated over time and required extensive restoration work to bring them back to their former glory.
Studio8 Architects approached the renovation by carefully restoring the original trulli while strategically extending the property with two entirely new volumes. This thoughtful design creates what the architects describe as a "time gradient" across the property, showcasing the evolution of building techniques and the continuity of local craftsmanship through different historical periods. The arrangement allows visitors to experience the progression from ancient construction methods to contemporary architectural approaches.
The main entrance to the renovated complex is positioned within the century-old stone extension, serving as a bridge that connects the historic trulli on the left side with the newly constructed volumes on the right. To improve natural lighting throughout the structure, large windows were carefully inserted into the thick stone walls without compromising their structural integrity. The interior layout deliberately differentiates between preserved historical spaces and contemporary areas, respecting the building's heritage while meeting modern living standards.
The oldest trulli sections have been converted into bedrooms that maintain their traditional textures and architectural details, preserving the authentic character of these historic spaces. Meanwhile, the new volumes house modern amenities including a fully equipped kitchen, master bedroom, and common areas designed for contemporary living. The kitchen features a sleek concrete island and stainless-steel workstation, while floor-to-ceiling glass doors provide stunning views over the surrounding olive groves, creating a seamless connection between interior spaces and the natural landscape.
The restoration process emphasized traditional Puglian masonry techniques, utilizing mortar-free construction methods that provide excellent insulation and structural integrity. Studio8 Architects collaborated closely with local stonemasons, combining modern architectural planning with traditional craftsmanship skills. The design team employed innovative visual communication methods, including spray-painted guides, to ensure that construction work aligned perfectly with their design intentions while respecting historical building methods.
The estate has been designed to preserve its natural environment, maintaining the raw red soil that characterizes the region and integrating a swimming pool that beautifully reflects the surrounding olive trees. Both interior and exterior furnishings have been kept deliberately understated, allowing the focus to remain on the architectural forms and the overall spatial experience rather than decorative elements.
Trullo Mita stands as an exemplary demonstration of how historical architecture can be carefully integrated with contemporary interventions. The project successfully offers all the functionality and comfort of modern living while retaining the distinctive character and cultural heritage that makes Puglia's trulli buildings so special and architecturally significant.
