From November 27 to December 12, 2024, the Sookmyung Women’s University Moonshin Museum of Art is hosting the special exhibition Arachne Eye (아라크네 아이, ARACHNE EYE), inspired by the mythological tale of Arachne from Greek mythology. The exhibit features the works of 25 contemporary artists who reinterpret Arachne’s perspective and legacy through over 130 pieces of intricate modern craft.
Arachne, renowned in mythology for her exceptional weaving and needlework skills, is a tragic figure who dared to challenge the gods. Her work, which exposed the flaws of the Olympian deities, provoked Athena’s wrath, leading to Arachne’s transformation into a spider, forever weaving webs as punishment. This tale serves as the conceptual foundation for the exhibition, inviting visitors to explore themes of creativity, defiance, and artistry.

Supported by the Moonshin Museum and organized by the Blue Cultural Foundation, Arachne Eye showcases the artistic evolution of weaving, knitting, crochet, and embroidery. The works reimagine traditional fiber art techniques with contemporary innovation, presenting unique interpretations of mythology and the enduring relevance of craft in modern art.
The exhibition delves into the intersection of mythology and modern craftsmanship, with experimental pieces that explore how ancient narratives can be revived and expanded through art. In addition to Arachne-inspired works, visitors will encounter creations that push the boundaries of conventional craft, emphasizing both the warmth of human touch and the ingenuity of the artists.

Among the highlights is the celebration of traditional handcrafts, underscoring their philosophical and aesthetic values. The meticulous labor behind each piece is a testament to the resilience and creativity that fiber arts have represented for generations. The exhibition not only honors Arachne’s spirit but also invites reflection on the broader significance of women’s labor and artistry throughout history.
Sookmyung Women’s University President Sang Hyun Jung emphasized the importance of hosting such a meaningful exhibition at the university, which has championed women’s education for over a century. “Through this exhibition, we hope to reignite appreciation for traditional textile arts and illuminate the enduring value of women’s craftsmanship,” he
