From December 23, 2024, to January 1, 2025, the Lynn Fine Art Gallery will host New Start, the fourth solo exhibition of ceramic artist Oh Jong Bo. The exhibition showcases his dual approach to ceramic art, blending traditional and contemporary methods to capture the essence of Korean aesthetics.

In his traditional works, Oh focuses on the creation of dal hangari (moon jars), a symbol of the Joseon Dynasty’s cultural and spiritual heritage. These pieces embody the spirit of Korea’s scholarly traditions and its historical elegance. By contrast, his modern works delve into ceramic drawing, utilizing the physical properties of clay to express contemporary human emotions and societal attributes on ceramic surfaces.

Oh describes his artistic philosophy as an exploration of the connection between Korean history and modernity. Through ceramics, he seeks to convey simplicity, restraint, and a harmonious beauty that resonates with the natural world. “The history and artistry of traditional ceramics hold our emotions and spirit. They remind us of the understated yet profound beauty found in Korean culture,” he states in his artist's note.

The exhibition highlights the interplay between these two creative dimensions. The moon jars offer a timeless tribute to Korea’s rich artistic heritage, while the ceramic drawings serve as a canvas for contemporary reflections, bridging the gap between past and present.

This duality not only celebrates Korean traditional art but also reimagines it through a modern lens, inviting viewers to experience the continuity of cultural identity in an evolving world.

Lynn Fine Art Gallery continues to promote innovative works by Korean artists, positioning exhibitions like New Start as opportunities to honor both tradition and transformation. Oh’s dedication to exploring the organic connection between history and the present solidifies his reputation as an artist deeply rooted in his cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of ceramic art.
