K-pop sensation Seventeen achieved a monumental milestone at the 2024 MAMA Awards in Osaka, Japan, on November 23, securing two grand prizes: Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. The group also claimed three additional awards, further cementing its status as one of K-pop’s premier acts. Member Woozi, visibly emotional, remarked, “We never imagined standing here, let alone receiving these awards.”

Debuting in 2015 under Pledis Entertainment, a medium-sized agency, Seventeen defied the odds to rise as a global powerhouse. With 13 members, the group overcame initial skepticism surrounding its size, thanks to an exceptionally dedicated fandom that drives album sales and concert attendance.

Their discography boasts remarkable achievements. The 11th mini-album, Seventeenth Heaven, released in October 2022, made history by selling 5.09 million copies in its first week. In 2024, both their best album and 12th mini-album, Spill the Feels, surpassed 3 million sales each. Seventeen is on the verge of an extraordinary feat: selling over 10 million albums in two consecutive years.

Seventeen’s global appeal extends to sold-out performances at prestigious venues such as Seoul World Cup Stadium, Japan’s Tokyo Dome, Osaka Kyocera Dome, and 10 U.S. shows. Their intricate choreography, polished performances, and each member’s unique talent have become trademarks of the group.

Pop music critic Park Hee-ah praised Seventeen as “a textbook example of K-pop excellence,” emphasizing that every member contributes distinctively, ensuring none are overshadowed. Their variety show, Going Seventeen, has further endeared them to fans, creating a deeper connection.

While versatility is one of their strengths, allowing the group to seamlessly adapt to diverse musical styles, it also presents a challenge. Critics argue that this flexibility can dilute their unique identity. “Their wide-ranging appeal, while impressive, can result in a scattered focus,” said pop music critic Jung Min-jae.

This lack of a clear signature style may explain Seventeen’s relative underperformance in markets like the U.S. and Europe compared to peers like Stray Kids and Ateez. Despite a devoted global fanbase, the group has yet to achieve a No. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 or a Hot 100 single. Moreover, critics note the absence of a universally recognized anthem akin to BTS’s Dynamite or Spring Day.

Seventeen also faces the challenge of navigating mandatory military service. Following Jeonghan’s enlistment in September, all Korean members, except for S.Coups, must fulfill their service obligations. Critics view this as both a hurdle and an opportunity. Military hiatuses could offer members a chance to explore individual projects and broaden their public appeal. Seungkwan’s success in entertainment programs is often cited as an example of leveraging such opportunities.

However, more members need to establish individual profiles to sustain the group’s momentum during this transitional period. As Seventeen approaches its 10th anniversary, the group finds itself at a pivotal juncture. Balancing its current dominance with the need for broader appeal and individual growth will be crucial in determining its long-term legacy.
