The National Daegu Science Museum is hosting a special exhibition titled ".gif: Moving Pictures" from October 22, 2024, to March 3, 2025, showcasing the fascinating world of animation. This interactive exhibition takes visitors through the science and technology behind how still images come to life, offering an in-depth exploration of animation's history, production techniques, and cutting-edge technology used in modern animated films.

The exhibition is divided into four distinct sections, each offering a unique glimpse into the world of animation. The first section, The History and Types of Animation, delves into the origins of animation, starting with the ancient cave paintings of Altamira and moving through to Émile Reynaud’s early visual theater. This section presents the evolution of animation, from traditional 2D techniques to the 3D and digital methods used in contemporary filmmaking.

The second section, The Science and Principles of Animation, focuses on the scientific principles that make animation possible. Visitors will learn about optical illusions, such as the moiré effect and animation, through interactive exhibits. The hands-on displays also allow visitors to explore classic animation tools like the zoetrope, thaumatrope, and praxinoscope, which were used before the advent of digital animation. Additionally, the section highlights the physics behind animated movements and offers AR and VR experiences where visitors can create their animated characters using generative AI.

The third section, Animation Production and Screening, takes a closer look at the process of planning and creating animations. Visitors can step into the maker studio to experiment with stop-motion animation, shadow puppetry, and object animation. This section also provides an opportunity to try out foley sound techniques, bringing animations to life with realistic sound effects. The accompanying "CinePark" area will showcase various animated films, including award-winning entries from the 4th Science Video Content Contest, organized by the National Daegu Science Museum.

In the final section, Archive and Photo Zone, nostalgia takes center stage as visitors are invited to watch beloved 1990s animations on vintage CRT televisions. The retro-inspired space is designed to evoke memories of classic animated shows, allowing visitors to take a trip down memory lane. There are also themed photo zones where guests can pose with iconic characters, creating lasting memories of their visit.

The exhibition not only celebrates the artistic creativity behind animation but also emphasizes the scientific and technological advancements that have driven the medium forward. From the physics of motion to modern AR/VR applications, ".gif: Moving Pictures" provides an educational and entertaining experience for visitors of all ages.

Tickets for the exhibition are priced at 5,000 KRW for adults and children, and 4,000 KRW for infants. Discounts are available when combined with tickets for the permanent exhibition halls.

The National Daegu Science Museum’s director expressed excitement about the event, stating, “This exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for visitors to learn about the fascinating science behind animation and to engage with the creative process. We hope it will inspire curiosity and creativity in all who attend.”

The ".gif: Moving Pictures" exhibition offers a rare chance to see animation from both a historical and technological perspective, making it a must-visit for families, students, and anyone with an interest in art and science. With its blend of interactive experiences and educational content, the exhibition promises to captivate and inspire visitors throughout its run.
