The Gangdong Cultural Foundation is presenting the exhibition "Giuseppe Vitale: World of Animals" at Artrang inside Gangdong Art Center through August 23 to celebrate the venue's 15th anniversary.
Organized in collaboration with Danaplay Co., Ltd., the exhibition is designed for children and families, featuring original illustrations by Italian picture book artist and arts educator Giuseppe Vitale alongside a range of educational and interactive programs.
Vitale's work is influenced by the child-centered creative education philosophy developed in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The exhibition is built around the theme of "Relationship (LEGAMI)," a central concept that runs throughout the artist's body of work.
The animals depicted in the illustrations serve as metaphors for human relationships in families, friendships, schools, and everyday life. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on their own emotions and interpersonal connections while expanding on ideas introduced in the artist's previous project, "My New Friend."
Original illustrations are displayed alongside drawings, sketches, and sculptural installations throughout the gallery. The first floor focuses on representative works, while the second floor features new pieces and hands-on activities. Visitors can also experience interactive media art, archival exhibition videos, the artwork "LOST DOGS," and installation spaces using CMYK lighting.
Interactive activities include creating animal-themed images using mirrors and OHP film, as well as storytelling with paper blocks and light tables. A family photo zone is also available at the end of the exhibition.
Opened in 2011, Gangdong Art Center serves as a performing arts and exhibition venue in southeastern Seoul while offering educational and community arts programs. The Gangdong Cultural Foundation said the exhibition aims to provide opportunities for children and families to engage with original artwork while participating in creative experiences inspired by the artist's work.
