ILLIT will release their fifth EP, “BREAK EVEN,” on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
The album uses the financial concept of a break-even point to describe an emotional imbalance. Its narrative follows someone who has invested time and affection in a relationship before realising those feelings were not equally returned.
The title track, “You’re Under Arrest,” turns that discovery into a fictional arrest operation. The lyrics present the other person’s habitual kindness as evidence of a crime after it was mistaken for romantic interest. The narrator ultimately decides to stop spending further time and emotion on the relationship.
The electro-pop track is built around a whistled motif, sharp synthesiser sounds, vocal effects and a repeated hook. Its performance adopts a “black agent” concept, with choreography based on pursuit and arrest. Movements include reactions to whistle signals and hand gestures shaped like guns.
“BREAK EVEN” contains four songs arranged as a continuous story. “Super in Love” begins with the recognition that the attraction was one-sided, while “More” follows embarrassment as it develops into irritation.
“You’re Under Arrest” marks the decision to end the relationship. The closing track, “Pop,” shifts to an unexpected new attraction and presents the previous failure as part of the transition towards another possibility.
ILLIT first performed “You’re Under Arrest” during their encore concerts in Korea on Oct. 17 and 18. A video of the performance subsequently entered YouTube’s daily popular music-video charts in 13 countries and regions.
Ahead of release, “BREAK EVEN” surpassed 500,000 pre-saves and reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Pre-Save Top 10 ranking.
ILLIT will begin music programme promotions on KBS2’s “Music Bank” on Oct. 30. A release pop-up will also operate on the first floor of the HYBE headquarters in Seoul’s Yongsan District from Oct. 30–31.
