The South Korean streaming service, Tving, has made history by winning the Best Screenplay Award in the feature-length competition category at the 6th Cannes International Series Festival (Canneseries). At the closing ceremony of this year's event, held at the Lumiere Grand Theater in Cannes, France, the Tving original series "Bargain" was awarded the prize. This is the first time a domestic streaming service production has been recognized at Canneseries.
The show's screenplay was co-written by Jeon Woo-sung, Choi Byeong-yun, and Kwan Jae-min. During the awards ceremony, Jeon expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am honored to receive this invitation and recognition for our very unique concept work. I very much appreciate this award."
Based on director Lee Chung-hyun's 14-minute short film of the same name, made in 2015, "Bargain" tells the story of a human organ trafficking ring and its victims who must escape a sudden earthquake. It was the only Korean title invited to Canneseries this year and was up for five awards, including Best Series, Best Music, Best Screenplay, Best Performance, and the Special Interpretation Award categories.
The official screening held at the Lumiere Grand Theater on April 16 was met with a standing ovation from over 2,300 audience members present. The Major foreign press, including Le Figaro and Panorama, praised "Bargain" for its concept, composition, and acting.
A spokesperson for Tving expressed their delight in the recognition, stating, "We are very happy that the Tving original 'Bargain' was the first series by a domestic streaming service in Korea to win at Canneseries. We are honored to be able to continue the K-content syndrome and will do our best to discover new content that will impress and engage viewers worldwide."
"Bargain" is available for streaming on Tving in Korea and on Paramount+ internationally.
