In the bustling world of fantasy comedy, South Korean actor Gang Dong-won is set to portray the enigmatic Dr. Cheon, a cunning con artist posing as an exorcist. The upcoming film, "Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman," draws inspiration from the beloved webtoon "Possessed," blending humor and action as it delves into the antics of a fraudulent exorcist and his trusty assistant, played by Lee Dong-Hwi.
The storyline follows Dr. Cheon as he dupes unsuspecting clients through his exorcism YouTube channel, until a chance encounter with a new client, Yoo-kyung (Esom), thrusts him into a harrowing battle against a real case of demonic possession. Alongside his assistant, the duo sets out to rescue Yoo-kyung's possessed sister from the clutches of a powerful evil spirit named Beom Cheon (Huh Joon-ho).
This cinematic venture marks the directorial debut of Kim Seong-sik, previously an assistant director on acclaimed films like "Parasite" (2019) and "Decision to Leave" (2022). Gang Dong-won expressed initial concerns about the role's resemblance to his past performances but was ultimately drawn to the unique and intriguing plot of the film. He emphasized his efforts to differentiate the character from his previous roles, injecting depth and complexity into Dr. Cheon's persona, which is marred by personal traumas.
Utilizing cutting-edge computer graphics to vividly depict spirits and employing cartoon-style visuals to illustrate spiritual possession, the film merges reality with fantasy in a delicate balance. Director Kim Seong-sik admitted to the challenges of bringing the fantasy story to life while striving to maintain authenticity.
Veteran actor Huh Joon-ho also spoke of the demanding nature of his role, reflecting on the complexities he encountered and expressing his eagerness to explore unfamiliar genres. "Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman" is set to premiere in Korea on September 27, promising an exhilarating blend of fantasy and comedy for audiences to enjoy.
