South Korea's jazz scene is coming alive this fall with an impressive array of festivals and concerts featuring both international and domestic artists. From the country's largest annual jazz celebration to intimate solo performances, music lovers have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sophisticated sounds of jazz during the cooler months.
The 22nd edition of the Jarasum Jazz Festival, South Korea's premier jazz event that began in 2004, took place from Friday through Sunday on Jara Island and in the surrounding areas of Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province. This year's festival showcased an international roster of 41 acts from 17 countries, demonstrating the global appeal and reach of the event. The stellar lineup included renowned artists such as the Bill Frisell Trio, Ibrahim Maalouf, Mathias Eick Quintet, and Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio, along with Hungarian Focus artists Dresch Quartet.
Additional performances at the Jarasum Jazz Festival featured a diverse mix of established and emerging talent, including Bloto, Bireli Lagrene, Lakecia Benjamin, Dianne Reeves, and Korean artist Sunwoojunga. Festival-goers could purchase tickets through Yes24 Ticket in advance or buy them on-site before the event concluded, making the festival accessible to both planning enthusiasts and spontaneous music lovers.
The jazz celebration continues in South Korea's coastal city of Busan, where the 2025 Haeundae Jazz Festival will take place at the Haeundae Culture Center from October 22-25. Since its establishment in 2014, this festival has evolved into a community-centered musical celebration that perfectly captures the beauty and spirit of jazz. Located in Haeundae, home to the city's most famous beach, the festival offers fresh performances each year in a stunning seaside setting. This year's lineup includes the Sungkimoon trio and soul singer Park Jae-hong among other talented performers.
For those seeking a more intimate jazz experience, several solo concerts and special events are scheduled throughout the fall season. The "2025 Jazz All Stars" event, set for November 21 at the Mapo Art Center in Daeheung-dong, western Seoul, promises to bring together jazz artists from different generations for a unique musical experience. This 120-minute showcase will feature performances by first-generation jazz vocalist Kim Jun, renowned jazz diva Woong-san, and accomplished jazz musician Maria Kim. Adding a traditional Korean element to the evening, Han Chung-eun, who plays Korean traditional bamboo flutes including daegeum and sogeum, will appear as a special guest.
Another collaborative effort features jazz vocalist You Sa-rang joining forces with pianist Joeng Mose, jazz bassist Lee James, drummer Kim Jeong-hoon, and guitarist Kim Young-min to form a dynamic quartet. Their concert, titled "Romantic Jazz," focuses on warm, intimate jazz arrangements that reimagine songs from various genres. This performance is scheduled for November 26 at the Anseong Customized Art Hall in Gyeonggi Province, offering audiences a cozy venue for enjoying sophisticated musical interpretations.
One of the season's most anticipated solo performances comes from jazz vocalist Woong-san, who will present her concert "All That Jazz" at the National Theater of Korea's Haeoreum Theater on December 5. According to JP Company, her management agency, this concert will showcase an innovative fusion of jazz and traditional Korean music, known as "gugak." Woong-san will perform several of her signature songs, including "Colors," "All in a Dream," "Somehow Today," "Everything Must Change," and "Yesterday."
The December concert will feature an exceptional lineup of guest artists who specialize in blending traditional Korean music with contemporary styles. Lee Jae-ha, known for his mastery of the geomungo (a Korean zither) and his ability to merge traditional Korean music with modern sensibilities, will join the performance as a special guest. Bang Ji-won, who plays the janggu (a Korean drum), will also contribute to the evening's unique sound. Additional performers include jazz saxophonist Lee Jung-sik, gypsy music violinist KoN, and contemporary dancer Lee Luda, creating a truly multidisciplinary artistic experience that combines music, traditional instruments, and movement.
These upcoming jazz events reflect South Korea's growing appreciation for the genre and its commitment to both preserving traditional musical elements while embracing international influences. The variety of venues, from outdoor festival settings to intimate theater spaces, ensures that jazz enthusiasts of all preferences can find performances that suit their tastes during this musically rich autumn season.
