Hyundai Motor Co. has officially unveiled a groundbreaking new exhibition featuring the works of indigenous Sami artist Maret Anne Sara at London's prestigious Tate Modern gallery. This exhibition marks a significant milestone as it celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Hyundai Commission, an annual art project that represents one of the most important partnerships between a major South Korean corporation and a world-renowned British cultural institution.
The Hyundai Commission project, which has been running for a full decade, operates on a selective basis, choosing just one exceptional artist each year to create and display their work in the iconic Turbine Hall. This central exhibition space at Tate Modern serves as the venue for showcasing the most innovative and cutting-edge contemporary art from around the globe. The program has become highly regarded in the international art world for its commitment to highlighting groundbreaking artistic expressions.
Maret Anne Sara has gained international recognition for her powerful artistic work that explores critical ecological and environmental issues through the unique lens and perspective of the Sami people. The Sami are an indigenous group with deep historical roots in the Sapmi region, a vast area that spans across the northern territories of four different countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Sara's work brings attention to indigenous rights, environmental concerns, and the intersection of traditional knowledge with contemporary global challenges.
The centerpiece of Sara's exhibition is a spectacular and imposing multi-layered sculpture that makes dramatic use of the full architectural scope of Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. This impressive installation features reindeer hides that have been tightly bound together using electrical power cables, creating a powerful visual statement that stretches across the entire 28-meter height of the gallery space. The work creates a striking juxtaposition between traditional indigenous materials and modern industrial elements, highlighting themes of cultural preservation versus technological advancement.
Visitors to Tate Modern will have an extended opportunity to experience Sara's powerful artistic vision, as her works are scheduled to remain on display until April 2026. This lengthy exhibition period allows for maximum public engagement and educational impact, giving both art enthusiasts and casual visitors ample time to explore and contemplate the deeper meanings within the artist's work.
Choi Doo-eun, who serves as the art director of Hyundai Motor, expressed the company's enthusiasm about this landmark anniversary exhibition. "We are delighted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hyundai Commission with Maret Anne Sara's significant work, which transforms Tate Modern's Turbine Hall into a space grounded in indigenous history, knowledge and practice," Choi stated, emphasizing the cultural importance and transformative nature of the installation.
Looking toward the future, Hyundai Motor has demonstrated its long-term commitment to supporting contemporary art and cultural initiatives. Earlier this year, the automotive giant announced a major extension of its partnership with Tate Modern, ensuring that this successful collaboration will continue well into the future. The original partnership, which began in 2014, has now been extended through 2036, representing more than two decades of sustained support for innovative contemporary art and cultural exchange between South Korea and the United Kingdom.
