Design magazine Dezeen has highlighted four innovative workplace environments around the world that feature furniture pieces from their Showroom section, demonstrating how creative design solutions are transforming modern office spaces. The featured workplaces span from Brussels to Madrid, showcasing how international brands are reimagining furniture for contemporary work environments.
This latest installment of Dezeen's "In Situ" series focuses on real-world office spaces that incorporate seating and space-dividing systems from various international furniture brands. The examples range from a historic Italian palazzo converted into modern offices to an open-air courtyard in Belgium, illustrating diverse approaches to workplace design and functionality.
In Brussels, Belgium, French design brand Petite Friture's Week-End outdoor furniture collection has transformed the courtyard of the Befimmo headquarters into an inviting outdoor workspace. The Arts 56 building, originally constructed in 1968 in the Brutalist architectural style, underwent renovation in 2021 by creative agency NCBHAM. The building's glass and concrete structure surrounds a central courtyard featuring gravel flooring, trees, and flower beds.
The outdoor furniture collection includes slatted garden chairs, armchairs, high stools, and tables in burgundy, dark blue, and white colors, strategically placed to create distinct areas for dining, informal meetings, and outdoor breaks. "The Week-End collection completes the graphic and geometric scheme," explained representatives from Petite Friture. "The choice of pieces from the Week-End collection has once again made it possible to delimit several spaces and allow for different uses."
In Madrid, Spain, the LOOM La Célula co-working space features tens of thousands of teardrop-shaped aluminum links forming Kriskadecor's ceiling installations. Real estate company LOOM owns and manages multiple office spaces across Spain and Portugal, including the Castellana 85 location in Madrid, designed by local architecture studio Ballarin Mendoza. The aluminum chains, rendered in an ombre pastel colorway, were specifically chosen for their ability to allow natural light to filter through the workspace while maintaining visual separation.
"The aluminum chains, chosen for their functionality and aesthetics, envelop the glass-walled meeting rooms with soft color gradients that evoke the hues of spring," said Kriskadecor representatives. "Aluminum chains not only preserve transparency and visibility between different working areas, but also allow natural light to flow through, enhancing the sense of openness and connection with the outdoors."
The Lendhafen workspace in Graz, Austria, showcases German designer Konstantin Grcic's Miura stool, created in collaboration with Italian design brand Plank. Designed by local interdisciplinary studio WG3, Lendhafen serves as a flexible office space for the local business community, hosting various events including workshops, exhibitions, corporate presentations, and lectures for up to 100 attendees.
The stools are manufactured from reinforced polypropylene using plastic injection molding methods, making them both durable and lightweight to facilitate quick room reconfigurations. "Changing settings within a very short time requires furniture able to meet these demands," explained Matthias Gumhalter, one of the principal architects of Studio WG3. "Plank's Miura stools and tables, designed by Konstantin Grcic, offer highly functional support and withstand intensive use."
In Milan, Italy, the historic Palazzo Bocconi has been transformed into W-Executive Offices, featuring Italian furniture brand Mara's Icon chairs within glass-enclosed meeting rooms. The building, completed in the early 1900s, originally served as the primary residence of Milanese entrepreneur Ferdinando Bocconi and features ornate stuccoes, detailed frescoed ceilings, and ornamented mirrors throughout its interiors.
The contemporary glass meeting areas create a striking contrast with the building's elaborate historical decoration. Inside these modern spaces, Icon chairs designed by Marcello Ziliani for Mara are upholstered in dark blue fabric to complement the room's ceilings and back walls. "The choice of furniture was carefully considered, to harmonize the architecture and enhance functionality," said Pietro Valdes, CEO of W Executive.
These workplace examples demonstrate how modern furniture design is adapting to diverse architectural contexts and functional requirements. From outdoor metal furniture creating break spaces to aluminum ceiling installations managing light and space, each solution addresses specific workplace challenges while maintaining aesthetic appeal. The Dezeen Showroom platform continues to serve as an affordable space for brands to showcase new products and design innovations to a global audience of architects, designers, and workplace planners.
