South Korean police have concluded that K-pop artist Hwasa's performance in May, which sparked public indecency allegations, does not warrant criminal charges. The 28-year-old member of the girl group Mamamoo faced a police investigation following a lawsuit filed by a parents' organization, accusing her of "portraying a perverted sexual act" during a university festival.
The controversy arose from Hwasa's rendition of her 2018 song "Don't Give" at the Sungkyunkwan University festival, where she was seen engaging in a leg wide-open posture. The Student Parents Human Rights Protection Solidarity contended that this move amounted to public indecency, leading to the lawsuit against the artist.
After thorough scrutiny and interrogations involving all concerned parties, the Seongdong Police Precinct in Seoul announced their decision to forego pursuing criminal charges against Hwasa. Despite the criticisms and legal challenges, the act in question has not been deemed a criminal offense under the law.
Hwasa, a member of Mamamoo since their debut in 2014, is well-known for hits like "HIP" (2019) and "Décalcomanie" (2016). In addition to her group contributions, she has ventured into solo performances, starting with her single "twit" in 2019, and recently released her solo EP "I Love My Body" last month.
