Trot Music Shows Face Ratings Decline as New Seasons Strive for Innovation
▲ Courtesy of TV ChosunDespite a strong start, with the first episode leading in viewership ratings among Thursday broadcasts, signs of potential viewer fatigue have emerged. Comparisons with the previous season reveal a decline from 28.6 percent to 16.6 percent in viewership ratings for the inaugural episodes.
This trend extends beyond Miss Trot, as other trot music programs such as MBN's Trot Queen, Voice Trot, MBC Everyone's I'm a Trot Singer, SBS' Trot God Is Coming, and KBS2's Trot National Sports Festival have witnessed similar declines in ratings. Pop culture critic Kang Il-kwon attributes this phenomenon to the inherent nature of broadcasters learning from successful programs and replicating formats within the small and trend-focused Korean pop music market.
While trot music, once considered outdated and favored by an older demographic, experienced a resurgence through TV Chosun's Miss Trot and Mister Trot, winners of recent seasons have struggled to match the level of popularity achieved by the first season's victors, Song Ga-in and Lim Young-woong. The latter, in particular, gained a fan following comparable to K-pop idols.
Efforts to reinvigorate the genre include new twists in format, such as MBN's King of Active Singers, which introduced an international dimension by pitting the top seven Korean trot stars against the winners of Japan's Trot Girls Japan in a 2024 competition, starting on Nov. 28. As the landscape of trot music competitions evolves, the industry grapples with sustaining viewer engagement amid a proliferation of similar shows.

The third season of the widely popular audition program series, Miss Trot, premiered on Thursday, signaling a continuation of the nationwide trot music craze initiated by the inaugural season in 2019. In an attempt to inject novelty and sustain viewer interest, Miss Trot 3 introduces a diverse range of participants, including teenagers and contestants from overseas.
