JYP Entertainment's newest boy group KickFlip is making a rapid comeback with their third album release of 2025. The seven-member group will drop their latest EP titled "My First Flip" on Monday at 6 p.m., just four months after their previous release "Kick Out, Flip Now!"
The new album marks a creative shift for the K-pop septet, as they explore the universal theme of first love through the lens of a schoolboy's awkward yet charming romantic experience. "My First Flip" contains seven carefully crafted tracks, including "My First Love Song," "Band-Aid," "Crush," "Gas On It," and "404: Not Found." Notably, all group members participated in the songwriting process across the album, showcasing their growing artistic involvement.
Team leader Kyehoon identified "empathy" and "comfort" as the album's core themes. "I think it's a first love that anyone could experience, and an experience of being rejected after bravely confessing is something everyone has gone through. I hope many people can relate when they listen to our album," he explained during the album's press showcase.
The lead single "My First Love Song" represents a departure from their previous work, featuring an uptempo dance track built on a pop-punk foundation. The song combines powerful synthesizer sounds with energetic guitar riffs, capturing the heart-pounding moment of confession and delivering the fresh emotions associated with first love through KickFlip's distinctive energy.
Donghyeon, who contributed to both writing and composing the title track, revealed his intention to explore new creative territory. Moving away from the playful and rebellious themes of their first two albums—which focused on a schoolboy's determination to stay true to himself despite advice from parents and teachers—he crafted a love story with their fanbase in mind. "I thought a scene of confessing love under the sunset sky after school would be fresh and innocent," said the band's youngest member, who is currently still attending high school.
The collaborative spirit extended throughout the album's creation process. Minje, who co-wrote the track "Band-Aid," shared his excitement about the creative opportunity: "I got a great opportunity to participate, and it was a good experience that helped me take a step closer to music."
KickFlip will promote this album as a six-member group, as member Amaru has temporarily paused all activities due to health concerns. The group remains committed to delivering their signature high-energy performances despite the temporary change in lineup.
Recent guidance from JYP Entertainment founder and chief producer Park Jin-young has influenced the group's artistic direction. According to Kyehoon, Park emphasized the importance of identifying and building upon KickFlip's unique strengths. "He told us that while this album is important, it's even more crucial for us to recognize KickFlip's strengths and continue building on them in the future," Kyehoon shared. "Since our strength lies in live performance, we plan to showcase it on stage with a bright and energetic show."
The album represents KickFlip's continued evolution as artists while maintaining their commitment to relatable storytelling and dynamic performances that have characterized their brief but impactful career in the competitive K-pop landscape.
