London's National Gallery, one of the city's most visited cultural attractions, has announced ambitious expansion plans after securing $375 million in private donations. The institution revealed that this unprecedented funding includes "the two largest ever publicly reported single cash donations to a museum or gallery globally," marking a historic milestone in museum philanthropy.
The gallery has now launched an international architectural competition to design a new wing that will accommodate its expanding collection. The construction will take place on the last remaining undeveloped section of the current campus, strategically positioned to "revitalize the area between Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square, creating a vibrant, fresh experience for visitors." This expansion comes as the National Gallery celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2024, positioning the institution for its third century of operation.
The majority of the funding comes from two major sources, each contributing $150 million. Crankstart, the charitable foundation established by Sir Michael Moritz and his wife Harriet Heyman, provides one of these substantial donations. The second major contribution comes from the Julia Rausing Trust, representing a deeply personal tribute to art appreciation and accessibility.
Sir Hans Rausing, founder trustee of the Julia Rausing Trust, explained the emotional significance behind their donation. "My beloved wife Julia was a passionate supporter of the National Gallery and its role in making great art accessible to all," he said. "She would have wholeheartedly embraced the vision and ambition behind this project, recognizing its potential to transform the understanding and appreciation of art, and to reinforce the gallery's role on the world stage. This gift is given in her memory, so that others may discover the same beauty and inspiration in art that meant so much to her."
The remaining $75 million comes from multiple sources, including the National Gallery Trust, contributions from John Booth who serves as the National Gallery's chairman of trustees, and several other donors who have chosen to remain anonymous. This diversified funding approach demonstrates broad support for the gallery's expansion vision from various segments of the philanthropic community.
Beyond facility expansion, this funding will enable the gallery to extend its historic collection significantly. The institution has announced plans for "an exciting new collaboration with Tate and other museums in the United Kingdom and around the world," suggesting enhanced partnerships that could bring new exhibitions and cultural exchanges to London visitors.
Established by Parliament in 1824, the National Gallery maintains free admission and houses Britain's premier collection of Western European paintings spanning from the late 13th century to the early 20th century. The prestigious collection features masterpieces by renowned artists including Cezanne, Degas, Leonardo da Vinci, Monet, Raphael, Rembrandt, Renoir, Rubens, Titian, Turner, Van Dyck, Van Gogh, and Velázquez. Notable works like Georges Seurat's "Bathers at Asnières" represent the caliber of art that draws millions of visitors annually to the gallery's current location on the north side of Trafalgar Square in central London.
Sir Gabriele Finaldi, Director of the National Gallery, expressed his enthusiasm for the development. "I am hugely excited by these developments and am immensely grateful to our donors for their support on an unprecedented scale as the National Gallery steps into its third century," he stated. With the bicentenary celebrations now completed, Finaldi emphasized the gallery's forward-looking vision: "We want to be the place where the UK public and visitors from across the globe can enjoy the finest painting collection in the world from medieval times to our own, in a superb architectural setting."
