In a career spanning 37 years, veteran actress Kim Hye-soo has fearlessly embraced diverse roles. However, none have posed a greater challenge than her latest venture in the upcoming action film "Smugglers." Despite her initial trepidation about shooting scenes in water, Kim's unwavering dedication allowed her to conquer her fears, unveiling a fresh dimension of her talent to her devoted fans.
During a group interview at a café in Seoul's Jung District, Kim confessed to experiencing panic attacks while watching footage of real divers as part of her preparation for the film. The actress revealed her anxiety stemmed from a previous water-related scene in the 2012 film "The Thieves," where she found herself submerged in a handcuffed car. Nonetheless, thanks to the meticulous preparations by the director and the production team, Kim was able to overcome her apprehensions and deliver a compelling performance in "Smugglers."
Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, renowned for hits such as "Veteran" (2015) and "Escape from Mogadishu" (2021), "Smugglers" is one of four domestic films poised to revive the Korean film industry, which continues to grapple with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The film revolves around a group of female divers engaged in smuggling activities, with Ryoo exploring the backdrop of the sea as an empowering setting for women.
Ryoo expressed his admiration for the limitless possibilities of action sequences in water, as it allows for freedom of movement in all directions, unbound by the constraints of gravity. Filming underwater scenes posed significant challenges, but the efforts invested by director Ryoo and his team surpassed expectations, according to Kim.
"The director, along with the cast, worked tirelessly to minimize the difficulties of shooting underwater," Kim explained. "The script was modified extensively to accommodate our needs. During a scene where we performed somersaults underwater, I felt a sense of tension and nervousness dissipate."
Kim's character, Chun-ja, represents a resilient survivor, and her bond with Yum Jung-ah's character, Jin-sook, plays a crucial role in the film's narrative development. Kim emphasized that their relationship transcends a simple friendship, with Chun-ja relying on Jin-sook for her survival. In Kim's eyes, Jin-sook is more than just family to Chun-ja.
The strong connection between Kim and Yum extended beyond their on-screen roles, as they developed a profound camaraderie during filming. Kim praised Yum's versatility as an actor, acknowledging her sharpness and expansive range. Reflecting on her own limitations, Kim emphasized the significance of partnerships with directors and fellow actors, which she discovered over her years in the industry.
The success of "Smugglers" holds immense importance for Director Ryoo, who poured genuine thought and sincerity into the making of the film. While acknowledging the current hardships faced by the domestic film industry, Ryoo expressed optimism, recalling how the industry persevered during challenging times in the past. By attuning themselves to audience desires and seeking innovative paths to development, filmmakers can navigate this adversity and find solutions.
"Smugglers" is set to hit theaters on July 26, with high expectations of propelling the industry's recovery and exemplifying the power of female-led storytelling. The film serves as a testament to Kim Hye-soo's unwavering commitment to her craft and the resilience of the Korean film industry in the face of adversity.
