A groundbreaking exhibition titled "From Her To Eternity: The Women Who Photograph Music" is currently on display at Chicago's Wabash Arts Corridor through September 18th. Created and curated by singer and actress Courtney Love, the exhibition showcases the work of 46 world-renowned female music photographers in what organizers describe as "one grand urban tapestry" that highlights the crucial role of women in the music industry.
The exhibition was brought together by Courtney Love and Julie Panebianco, ARCny Creative Director and Philanthropist, featuring an impressive array of iconic photographs. The displayed works capture legendary musicians including Björk, Aretha Franklin, U2, Buddy Guy, PJ Harvey, Salt-n-Pepa, Jane's Addiction, Kurt Cobain, Billie Eilish, Beck, Flea, Pussy Riot, Lenny Kravitz, Chance the Rapper, Blur, Michael Stipe, Ringo Starr, Anita Lane, Nick Cave, Robert Smith, Celine Dion, Cardi B, Kiss, and Cocteau Twins.
The exhibition features female artists connected by their passion, dedication, and exceptional vision in capturing contemporary music and artists from every angle and moment. Notable photographers include Linda McCartney, Laura Levine, Ellen von Unwerth, Katarina Benzova, Pooneh Ghana, Sheila Rock, Ebet Roberts, The Tyler Twins, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Ruth Baza, Christy Bush, Kate Simon, Pam Springsteen, Carinthia West, Les Guzman, and Christina Birrer, among many others.
The project holds special significance as it was dedicated to the memory of Anita Lane, a member of the Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who passed away on April 27, 2021, at the age of 61. "We named the project FromHerToEternity and dedicated it to the memory of Anita Lane... Anita co-wrote the song 'From Her to Eternity' that the band used as a name for their first record. We got her family's and Nick's blessing to use this evocative title," explained Courtney Love and Julie Panebianco.
The exhibition serves as more than just a display of photography; it represents a tribute that elevates women and their legacy while empowering all women in the industry. Carmen Espinilla, Founder of Carmen Espinilla PR, Press, Events & Sponsorship Studio, emphasized the importance of the show: "As a woman working in an industry of brilliant women, it is exciting to highlight their voices and welcome this exhibition as a big thank you to all these artists who shaped and continue giving shape the world of music with their lens and senses."
Ruth Baza, one of the featured photographers, provided a poetic description of the exhibition, calling it "a large urban canvas made of insights by indie, intellectual, reasonable but sensitive contemporary Women of Enlightenment." She described the display as resembling "a kind of visual haute couture photo-textile" that creates "an elegant quilt made of echoes of rock, blues, punk, pop, hip hop, grunge, britpop, rap, heavy metal, folk, jazz, experimental music, soul, country, gospel, blues."
The outdoor gallery format transforms Chicago's urban landscape into a canvas for these powerful images, creating what Baza calls "a quilted, vivid and passionate tour on color and black and white images." The photographs span various genres and capture fantasies, dreams, real-life moments, improvisations, record covers, fashion poses, behind-the-scenes shots, and candid moments from music history.
The exhibition continues important conversations about female representation in contemporary music photography and how female artists choose to represent themselves and others. Located at 635 S Wabash Ave in Chicago, the Wabash Arts Corridor provides the perfect backdrop for this unprecedented collection that celebrates the artistic vision and technical skill of women who have documented music history through their lenses.
