Netflix's original film "Ballerina" made a significant impact on the streaming platform's weekly non-English charts in 62 countries, securing a spot in the top 10 list across various regions, including France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. The movie, released on Netflix last Friday, rapidly climbed to the third position in the weekly film rankings, as revealed on Tuesday.
"Ballerina" follows the story of Ok-ju, a former bodyguard, on her quest to avenge her best friend's death by taking on a sex trafficking ring leader. The film stars Jeon Jong-seo in the lead role, supported by a talented ensemble including Park Yu-rim, Kim Ji-hoon, Shin Se-hwi, and Kim Mu-yeol. Directed by Lee Chung-hyun, an emerging Korean filmmaker, "Ballerina" is based on Lee's earlier work, "Bargain," which won an award at this year's Cannes International Series Festival.
Critics have praised "Ballerina" for its intense action sequences and gripping narrative. The film holds a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, averaging 7.1 out of 10. Additionally, it boasts a 6.3 rating out of 10 on IMDb.
To provide viewers with a deeper understanding of the film's creation, a special making-of film was released on Wednesday on both Netflix and YouTube. The making film features insights and commentary from director Lee Chung-hyun, artistic director Kim Min-hye, and music director Gray, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes process of bringing "Ballerina" to life.
