Actor Choi Hyun-wook provides insight into his character in tvN's upcoming teen series, "Twinkling Watermelon," expressing that its touching narrative inspired his involvement.
"The whole time I was reading the script, I felt warmth. There was something about it that was touching. I really enjoyed it to the point that I was worried about my acting," the actor said in an interview with the network.
Scheduled to premiere on Sept. 25, the coming-of-age fantasy series revolves around high schooler Eun Gyeol (Ryeoun), who, by day, is a model student and by night, a guitarist in a band, pursuing his passion for music, all while dealing with the challenge of having deaf parents.
In an unexpected turn, Eun Gyeol goes back in time to 1995, where his parents were attending the same high school. Stuck in the past, he forms a band with his fellow students, including a special bond with his father, Lee Chan (Choi), navigating the complexities of a love triangle involving his parents.
The 16-part series is co-directed by Son Jeong-hyeon and Yoo Bum-sang, with a script penned by writer Jin Soo-wan, known for hit series like "The Moon Embracing the Sun" and "Kill Me, Heal Me."
Choi emphasized his goal to capture the essence of youthful innocence, especially focusing on themes of love and friendship.
"The concept of youth, in my opinion, cannot be defined with certain standards. But rather, it's about how you perceive it," he mentioned. "I tried my best to pull out the purest emotions that he felt for the first time in his life. To Lee Chan, everything about love and the band is his first time. So I'm trying to show the ingenuous nature of youth."
Director Son noted that Choi was a perfect fit for the outgoing, optimistic character, appreciating his enthusiasm for the script even amidst a busy schedule.
The series, set in the '90s, aims to evoke nostalgia and introduce pop culture from that era to younger viewers, placing significant focus on music as a cultural aspect.
"Twinkling Watermelon" is set to air on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8:50 p.m., promising a blend of comedy, melodrama, music, and a meaningful message.
