More than 200 photographs have been submitted to a photography competition that challenged residents and visitors to capture what makes Shropshire special to them. The competition, organized by CPRE (The Countryside Charity), has generated an impressive response from photographers showcasing the diverse beauty of this English county.
From the extensive collection of entries, CPRE has carefully selected 21 outstanding photographs that will be featured in a public exhibition at the Gateway Gallery in Shrewsbury. The selected images represent a wide range of subjects that highlight both the intimate and grand aspects of Shropshire's landscape and communities.
Peter Day, who is overseeing the project, explained that the photography subjects covered an impressive variety of scenes. "The subjects ranged from back gardens, alleyways and parks to the sweeping views of the Shropshire hills and our beautiful townscapes," Day noted. Among the notable entries is a striking photograph by Paul Murray, which captures a train passing over a historic viaduct, demonstrating the blend of transportation heritage and natural beauty that characterizes the region.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Gateway Gallery from October 2nd through October 31st. Entry to view the photography display is completely free, making it accessible to all community members and visitors. The gallery maintains regular operating hours from Monday through Friday, providing ample opportunity for people to experience the visual celebration of Shropshire's distinctive character.
To conclude the month-long exhibition, CPRE has organized a special event on October 31st featuring a full day of arts workshops, demonstrations, and educational talks. The closing day activities will include two separate drawing workshops designed to inspire creativity, as well as a creative writing session that encourages participants to explore artistic expression through words. This comprehensive programming aims to engage the community beyond passive viewing, inviting active participation in celebrating and creating art inspired by the local landscape.
