Amidst Controversy, Organizers Cite Circumstances for Event's Cancellation

Korea's rendition of the iconic Woodstock music festival, Woodstock Music and Art Fair 2023, has faced cancellation after organizers rescheduled the event from July to October.

SGC Entertainment, the festival's organizer, released an official statement on the event's website, citing circumstances concerning the organizer as the reason for the cancellation. The statement expressed deep apologies to the eager audience anticipating Woodstock's Korean edition.

This development comes two months after the organizers initially announced the postponement to October, with the intention to ensure a safe event operation and work on completing the festival. Previously, they had emphasized it was a postponement and not a cancellation.

The festival was set to feature performances by acclaimed artists such as Jeon In-kwon, Insooni, Kim Wan-sun, Ryeowook of Super Junior, rapper Paloalto, and rock band Boohwal, among others.

This isn't the first time a Woodstock festival in Korea faced cancellation, as a previous attempt in 2010 also met a similar fate.

Woodstock 2023 Korea faced significant criticism since its January announcement. Fans expressed concerns about reusing the name Woodstock, known for the 1969 historic rock festival, as follow-up festivals in 1994, 1999, and 2009 garnered mediocre success and controversies. Additionally, skeptics questioned the choice of venue near the Hantan River in Pocheon, citing inadequate infrastructure. The festival's unclear artist lineup and high ticket prices, originally set at 400,000 won ($300) for a three-day pass, further fueled discontent among fans.
