A Christchurch-based interior designer has claimed a major international award for her stunning $2.3 million interior design of an alpine residence in Wanaka, New Zealand. Davinia Sutton of Detail by Davinia Sutton Design Studio won the SBID regional award for Best Interior over $1 million in the Rest of World category, proving that world-class design expertise exists right at home rather than requiring overseas consultants.
Sutton's award-winning design for the Alpine Residence was carefully crafted to reflect the dramatic Central Otago landscape that surrounds the property. The interior designer created what she describes as a "layered, sophisticated material palette" designed to provide warmth, texture, and atmosphere throughout the home. Her approach drew inspiration from the raw, shifting palette of stone, tussock, earth, and sky that characterizes the region.
"The design draws from the raw, shifting palette of stone, tussock, earth and sky," Sutton explained. "Every surface, finish and form was selected to honor this connection." The result is a home that feels both deeply grounded in its natural environment and elevated in its architectural response, with every detail carefully considered and intentional.
The heart of the home features a lounge area anchored by a striking schist fireplace, which Sutton says embodies the spatial drama and stillness that characterizes the entire house. Dark timbers create a beautiful contrast against bagged schist walls, while warm neutral shades are enlivened with bold patterning in area rugs and the backs of lounge furniture. This combination creates a sophisticated yet comfortable living space that reflects the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape.
The kitchen, positioned at the center of the home, was specifically designed for an avid cook and frequent entertainer who needed professional-level performance from the space. The focal point is a sculptural stainless steel island that serves as both a functional workspace and an artistic statement. In contrast to this modern element, the perimeter benches are crafted from honed natural stone and feature shark-nose detailing that adds both tactility and refinement to the design.
Throughout the home, bathrooms continue the natural theme while providing a sense of retreat and calm for residents and guests. The powder room stands out as particularly dramatic, featuring deep green tones and moody textures that create a more theatrical atmosphere. The bedrooms take a different approach, designed as soft, cocooning sanctuaries that offer comfort and tranquility.
Another New Zealand designer also earned recognition in the SBID awards, with Damian Hannah of German Kitchens in Wellington taking home the award for Best Kitchen Design in Australasia. Hannah's winning design was created for the Wharekauhau Country Estate, located on the shores of Lake Palliser in the Wairarapa region. The clients' love for natural materials allowed Hannah to push boundaries with textural and aesthetic design elements.
Hannah's award-winning kitchen features deep grooved veneers, backlit quartzites, steel mesh doors, and sliding stone panels. The cabinetry uses a deep-grooved Ebony veneer to accentuate the lodge feel of the estate, with bronze accents warming the overall palette. The star attraction is a large island featuring handpicked Patagonia quartzite with backlighting that transforms it into a piece of art.
The remote location of the Wharekauhau estate required special consideration for mood lighting, as low lighting in the evening maximizes the beauty of sunsets and stargazing opportunities. The kitchen also includes a separate scullery designed to serve as the workhorse of the space, along with a walk-in wine cellar featuring a dedicated cool area that provides the perfect environment for wine storage. Dekton benchtops complement the design, while an open wine cellar incorporates steel mesh display cabinets.
Both Davinia Sutton and Damian Hannah will travel to London to attend the announcement of the SBID Global Awards on October 24, where their regional wins will compete against international entries. Their success demonstrates the high caliber of design talent available in New Zealand, capable of creating award-winning interiors that rival the best work being done anywhere in the world.
