Director Zack Snyder's latest film, "Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire," is set to debut on Netflix this Friday. The 130-minute action sci-fi stars Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, and Bae Doona.
Snyder describes the film as a science-fantasy, distinguishing it from hardcore science fiction. He emphasizes a departure from overly abstracted scientific concepts, instead exploring a world with advanced technology rooted in mythology.
Known for his work on films like "300" (2007), "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” (2010), and “Justice League” (2017), Snyder has assembled an international cast for his latest project.
Bae Doona plays the role of Nemsis, a cyborg swordmaster, showcasing her dual-wielding swordsmanship skills influenced by the Malaysian martial art Silat and Bruce Lee's hybrid martial art, Jeet Kune Do. Bae's character is adorned in traditional Korean attire, including the iconic gat (hat).
During a press conference in Tokyo, Snyder highlighted the importance of incorporating elements of Korean culture, particularly Bae's character wearing a gat, traditionally worn by men. He noted that the decision was made to break gender norms and express the character's toughness and coolness while respecting Bae's Korean roots.
Bae herself expressed enthusiasm about wearing the traditionally male hat, stating that it added a unique dimension to her character. She also contributed to the costume design, suggesting long, wide pants inspired by Kendo for her role as a sword-wielding warrior.
"Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire" blends futuristic and historical influences, offering a distinct approach to the sci-fi genre with a diverse cast and a fusion of cultural elements.
