A new student housing development has opened at the Delft University of Technology Campus in the Netherlands, featuring 137 self-contained residential units designed by Amsterdam-based architecture firm Studioninedots. The project, named Suite 9, spans 6,200 square meters and was completed in 2025, representing a significant addition to the university's accommodation infrastructure.
The building's most distinctive feature is its central 'Heart' – a massive semi-outdoor communal space that serves as the focal point for student social life and activities. This central atrium not only defines the building's striking architectural profile but also functions as a natural gathering place where student community life can flourish. The space has been specifically designed to encourage interaction and foster connections among residents.
The design team, led by Albert Herder, Vincent van der Klei, Arie van der Neut, and Metin van Zijl, worked alongside collaborators Ania Bozek, Eva Souren, and Anouk van Deuzen to create a modern living environment tailored to contemporary student needs. The project was developed in partnership with Daiwa House Modular, utilizing innovative construction techniques to optimize both efficiency and quality.
Suite 9 represents Studioninedots' commitment to creating vibrant educational architecture that goes beyond mere accommodation. The building incorporates sustainable materials including wood and steel, reflecting modern environmental consciousness in campus development. The project's design philosophy centers on creating spaces that support both individual privacy and community engagement.
The development addresses the growing demand for quality student housing in Delft, one of the Netherlands' premier technical universities. Each of the 137 units has been designed as a self-contained residence, providing students with independent living spaces while maintaining connection to the broader campus community through the central Heart space and other shared amenities.
Photography by Sebastian van Damme captures the building's innovative design elements and the successful integration of private and communal spaces. The project stands as an example of how contemporary architecture can enhance the educational experience by creating environments that support both academic focus and social development for university students.
