Publishing house Contrejour has released 'Glaciers,' the final book by acclaimed Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, marking the end of a nearly four-decade collaboration that began with his first work published by the company. The publication serves as a tribute to the late photographer, who passed away in May 2025, and coincides with UNESCO's 2025 International Year for Glacier Preservation, launched in response to 2024 being recorded as the hottest year in history.

The relationship between Salgado and Contrejour dates back almost forty years to the publication of 'Autres Amériques' (Other Americas) in 1986. This groundbreaking collection featured photographs taken during extensive travels between 1977 and 1984, documenting Latin America while highlighting the enduring presence of peasant and indigenous cultures. The book's success stemmed from the compelling visual impact of Salgado's black and white photography, combined with Lélia Salgado's innovative layout design that presented most images across double-page spreads.

'Autres Amériques' achieved significant recognition in the photography world, winning the First Photo Book Prize and subsequently being reissued multiple times in four different languages. The work established Salgado as a major voice in documentary photography and began what would become a lasting partnership with Contrejour publishers.

Published in October 2025, 'Glaciers' represents Salgado's final creative endeavor, which he personally produced and supervised before his death. The book was designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado, who collaborated closely with Sebastião Salgado in selecting the images that would comprise this ultimate collection. This publication serves as both a conclusion to their publishing relationship and a form of homage to their departed friend.

The book addresses one of the most critical environmental challenges of our time: the climate crisis and the urgent need to protect fragile yet essential natural ecosystems, particularly mountains and glaciers. Through Salgado's distinctive photographic vision, 'Glaciers' offers readers an opportunity to explore and understand these threatened landscapes while raising awareness about their preservation.

'Sebastião Salgado: Glaciers' is published by Contrejour with editorial design by Lélia Wanick Salgado and features a preface by Elisa Palazzi. The book measures 24 x 30 centimeters, contains 128 pages, and is priced at 45 euros. It is available through the publisher's website at www.editions-contrejour.com.
