The European House of Photography is currently showcasing the first French monographic exhibition of Tyler Mitchell, running alongside a magnificent exhibition dedicated to Edward Weston. In just a few years, this young photography prodigy has established himself as one of the major names in the New Black Vanguard movement and as one of the most talented artists of his generation.
At just 30 years old, Mitchell has become the photographer everyone wants to work with. Fashion designers and magazines, where the young prodigy first built his solid reputation, are clamoring for his work. Collectors are equally eager to acquire his pieces – during the 2024 edition of Paris Photo, he shared gallery wall space at the Gagosian stand with none other than Richard Avedon. Museums have also taken notice of his exceptional talent.
The exhibition at the European House of Photography, which runs until January 25, 2026, serves as testament to this remarkable enthusiasm surrounding Mitchell's work. Before arriving in Paris, this traveling exhibition made stops at C/O Berlin, the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, and Photo Élysée in Lausanne. The widespread acclaim demonstrates the international recognition Mitchell has achieved in such a short time.
This remarkable success is accompanied by the publication of a superb monograph. The book is being released by Aperture for the English version and by EXB editions for the French version. The exhibition features works including "New Horizons II" from 2022, a detailed inkjet print measuring 127 x 103.8 cm, courtesy of Tyler Mitchell and Gagosian.
Mitchell's rapid rise in the photography world represents a significant moment in contemporary art, particularly within the context of the New Black Vanguard movement. His work continues to attract attention from major galleries, museums, and collectors worldwide, cementing his position as one of the most important photographers of his generation.
