Photographer Karsten Thormaehlen has created a stunning portrait collection featuring 50 centenarians from around the globe, capturing the wisdom, strength, and beauty of those who have lived for a full century. The photography book, titled "100 Years of Life's Happiness," showcases individuals who have witnessed and shaped four generations through their remarkable longevity.
Among the featured centenarians is Digna Obanda Amaya, 100 years old, who lives in one of the world's most coveted locations. Her home region, the Nicoya Peninsula on the western coast of Costa Rica, is renowned not only as one of the country's most beautiful areas but also as a place where people tend to live exceptionally long lives. When asked about her secret to reaching 100, Amaya offers simple yet profound advice: "Love yourself!" She also recommends, "Drink something. A small glass daily with lunch."
The photographs were taken in diverse locations across the world, including Sardinia, Romania, Japan, Costa Rica, as well as Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Thormaehlen's reduced, personal approach to photography makes visible the profound qualities that come with age, presenting each subject with both dignity and affection.
The book goes beyond mere portraits, offering intimate glimpses into the lives of these remarkable men and women. The accompanying texts allow the protagonists to share their experiences about love, health, and living a fulfilling life, often with considerable humor and heart. Their stories provide valuable insights into what it truly means to live for a century.
Another featured centenarian exemplifies the vibrant spirit of longevity. At her 100th birthday celebration, Jesus Davila was photographed dancing with her son in the rural town of Belen in the Carrillo district. The people of Nicoya are known for their ability to enjoy life to the fullest, an attitude expressed in the local phrase "pura vida" (pure life), which translates loosely to "all good" or "stay cool."
"100 Years of Life's Happiness" serves as both a tribute to life and an advocacy for aging with dignity. Thormaehlen's portrait series about seniors aims to challenge our perceptions of aging while addressing extended life expectancy and the associated societal changes that come with an aging population.
Thormaehlen's extensive body of work has gained international recognition, with his publications being exhibited around the globe. His photography has earned numerous prestigious awards, including the Cannes Lions (Press Lions) and Gold at the ADC Festival. He was also nominated by the Robert Bosch Foundation for their German Age Award, recognizing his contribution to changing perspectives on aging.
The photographer's portraits have been honored four times with the Portrait of Humanity Award, demonstrating the universal appeal and significance of his work. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has utilized his images for a campaign against age discrimination, highlighting the important social message embedded in his artistic vision.
The book "100 Years - Life's Happiness" is now available through Knesebeck Publishing House, offering readers an opportunity to witness the remarkable faces and stories of those who have achieved the extraordinary milestone of living a full century.
