Local London-based architecture studio Owain Williams Architects has successfully converted a disused garage site into the Stroud Green Housing Centre, creating a innovative public drop-in space and office facility. The project features a distinctive large timber gate frontage and serves as the new headquarters for the Stroud Green Housing Co-Operative, which relocated from a more confined location nearby.
Situated on a compact 38-square-meter site tucked between terraced houses near Finsbury Park, the center represents an ambitious attempt to create civic architecture on a miniature scale. Despite its small footprint, the design intentionally captures the "monumental" feeling typically associated with traditional civic buildings. The architects achieved this by extending the feeling of the public street into a large entrance vestibule and creating a flexible, double-height interior space illuminated by strategically placed clerestory windows.
"The central principle was to create a small but meaningful civic building – a public building in miniature – that embodies the organizational values of the co-operative: community, resourcefulness and aspiration," founder Owain Williams explained. The timber-framed structure is raised on a concrete plinth and faces the street with a prominent large window and gate, set within a facade of Scottish larch cladding that was specifically designed to mirror the adjacent garden fences.
The building's defining architectural feature is its large entrance gate, which opens to reveal a porch space featuring a mirrored ceiling and full-height glazing. This design element visually connects the interior directly to the street, creating a seamless transition between public and private space. The interior consists of a singular, flexible space that can operate as an office, drop-in clinic, and meeting room, depending on the community's needs.
The architects cleverly stepped up the building toward the rear of the site, enabling the creation of a dramatic double-height space and accommodating a row of large clerestory windows. "The entrance sequence – the wide gate which is fixed open each morning into a mirrored vestibule – is perhaps the defining gesture," Williams noted. "Despite the small scale, this threshold gives the building presence and a sense of waking up each morning and being put to bed each night."
Williams emphasized the importance of the clerestory roof design, explaining that "it lifts the center of the plan, bringing light and air, making the interior feel more generous and calm than its footprint suggests, with a sense of exuberance and aspiration." The interior walls are finished in white and wrapped by a datum of grey timber paneling, while the floors feature a distinctive mixture of teal and mint green vinyl.
At the rear of the center, a wall of built-in storage effectively separates the main area from a compact kitchenette and bathroom. These support spaces are illuminated by circular skylights and finished in a palette of pale cream, creating a cohesive design aesthetic throughout the building. The project represents part of a growing trend of infill architecture that maximizes the potential of underutilized urban spaces.
This innovative community center project demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform neglected urban sites into valuable public resources. By combining practical functionality with symbolic civic architecture, Owain Williams Architects has created a model for small-scale community development that could be replicated in similar urban contexts across London and beyond.
