A painting by renowned Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens, believed to have been lost for centuries, has been discovered in a Parisian townhouse and is set to go up for auction. The extraordinary find represents what experts are calling an extremely rare and incredible discovery in the art world.

Jean-Pierre Osenat, who made the discovery, found the painting about a year ago during an inventory and sale of a Parisian villa. "It is an extremely rare and incredible discovery," Osenat told the French news agency AFP. The painting has since been authenticated by German Rubens expert Nils Büttner and is scheduled to be auctioned by Osenat's auction house on November 30.

The rediscovered artwork measures approximately 106 by 73 centimeters and depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. According to Osenat, the painting represents "the beginning of Baroque painting: Christ on the cross is portrayed isolated, luminous and sharply defined against a dark and threatening sky." The composition features the city of Jerusalem illuminated in the background, set beneath a stormy sky that adds to the dramatic atmosphere typical of the Baroque period.

Rubens created this masterpiece in 1613 at the height of his artistic career. Art historians have been able to trace the painting's provenance through a copper engraving that documented its existence. To verify its authenticity, experts conducted comprehensive examinations including X-ray imaging and analysis of the paint pigments used in the work. According to Osenat, the painting remains "very well preserved" despite its age.

Historical records suggest that Rubens likely created this painting for a private collector. During the 19th century, the artwork was owned by painter William Bouguereau before eventually coming into the possession of the owners of the Parisian townhouse where it was recently discovered. The painting's journey through various private collections over the centuries explains how it remained hidden from public view for so long.

This discovery adds to the legacy of Peter Paul Rubens, one of the most influential Baroque painters of the 17th century, known for his dynamic compositions and masterful use of light and shadow. The upcoming auction is expected to generate significant interest from collectors and museums worldwide, given the rarity of discovering previously unknown works by such a celebrated master.
