Shane and Suzanne Grivna have created what they describe as a home with "a million little details" in their meticulously designed Craftsman-style house in southwest Rochester. Their 2009-built home at 2592 St. Peter Lane SW captures the essence of early 1900s craftsmanship while incorporating modern functionality for their family.
The couple's attention to detail is evident throughout their residence, from four custom tiles featuring trees and people enjoying nature that represent their family, to hand-scraped white oak floors and period-specific light fixtures on the main level. The home features a built-in bench in the foyer and distinctive cloud lift designs carved into wooden elements throughout the house. Many of their design inspirations came from Arts and Crafts movement magazines and books, drawing from the late 1800s to early 1900s movement that emphasized artistry and intricate details.
"You just can't find that anymore, the art of it is gone and so I think we just fell in love with the fact that those things always stood the test of time," Shane explained about Craftsman-style homes. "They never look dated and you can just appreciate like somebody could have never touched that thing since the day it was built." The couple first discovered their appreciation for these homes in North Carolina and decided to bring old-world craftsmanship to their Minnesota residence rather than settling for what Shane calls "Monopoly houses stamped" out by mass production.
The Grivnas chose the Mayo Woodlands neighborhood specifically for its family-friendly atmosphere, featuring homes arranged in small cul-de-sacs with a central park. Located south of the historic Mayowood mansion on land originally owned by the Mayo family, the development includes three distinct neighborhoods: the Prairie, Forest, and Village sections. The area functions as what Shane describes as "a large private park in Rochester," encompassing more than 200 acres of neighborhood-owned land where homes are positioned on an east-west grid to maximize sun exposure.
For their builder, the couple selected American Prairie Homes, a family-operated business run by a father and daughters team, continuing their theme of choosing family-oriented partners. The construction process took approximately one year, with the team including master craftsman John Hilla building everything by hand. The double doors throughout the home are book-matched, meaning they were cut from the same piece of wood with grain patterns that mirror each other perfectly. The Lakeville-based builder even personally stained all the wood in the house.
"That was another unique thing like during the build to come here and they've got essentially it's built but it's all raw wood so you can't really see the final, right? So you imagine all this with just like an unstained wood," Shane recalled. "Then they come in with the magic and it's all of a sudden it's like it went from 2D to 3D, and usually you don't experience that." This home became one of American Prairie Homes' final projects and their only construction in Rochester, making the attention to detail and craftsmanship even more precious as a legacy of Hilla's woodworking skills and dedication to family and friends. Tragically, Hilla died in a car crash in 2010.
The cloud lift designs found on doors and cabinets throughout the home pay homage to the style created by renowned Arts and Crafts movement architects Charles Greene and Henry Greene. According to the Smithsonian, their designs incorporated influences from Asian, European, and Native American styles. The Greene brothers' most famous work, the Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features Tiffany glass windows, oak wedges, and an enclosed porch. The movement's bungalow-style homes gained particular popularity in California, including a designated area called Bungalow Heaven located about two miles from the Gamble House.
Beyond its architectural beauty, the Grivnas designed their home with practical functionality in mind. The house includes built-in cubbies in the mudroom, a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, and a Jack-and-Jill bathroom equipped with two sinks. Suzanne added a personal touch to the laundry room with green and purple checkered floors and yellow counters designed to represent the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. The home also features a three-season porch that Suzanne describes as "our cabin before we had a cabin," explaining that "we're porch people so it's always like the morning would start here because you have the sun coming in."
The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home showcases numerous artistic elements, including laser-cut stones shaped like fall leaves embedded in the front and three-season porches. "They're pouring wet concrete and these guys are trying to delicately place these tiles – and they of course have no faith that it's going to turn out. They have no idea what it's going to look like," Shane described the installation process. "And the next day when they take off the edge of it, they were the proudest guys. They felt like such artists." The lower level living room features a series of stained glass windows, a wet bar, and heated floors, along with stained glass pieces that capture aspen trees with the feeling of a sunset glowing through the forest.
The home's exterior reflects nature-oriented paint colors, including green with red-cladded windows, staying true to the Craftsman aesthetic. Inside, the couple chose knotty alder for the woodwork because of its organic appearance. "We had to pick out the wood species for all the woodwork and we wanted stuff that looked really natural. Like I love all the little broken parts and then the knots," Suzanne explained. "That organic look." Behind their cabin-like three-season porch, they maintain a garden filled with wildflowers and pumpkins.
As a family, the Grivnas have enjoyed watching movies, creating art, and organizing treasure hunts for acorns and leaves in the surrounding woods. The privacy of their location combined with access to extensive woodland creates a unique living experience. "There's the privacy but then having the woods and having the woods usable to just say, 'Oh, we're going to go back in there and hike around' – it was just really unique because you felt like you were miles and miles away from town," Shane noted.
After fifteen years in their carefully crafted home, the couple admits there's only one change they would make: adding a light switch in the hallway by the kitchen. The property is currently listed for $1.3 million through Coldwell Banker Realty, with realtor Chelsey Graning praising the "cozy, homey feel and the details ingrained throughout the home." As they prepare to potentially leave their masterpiece, there are elements the Grivnas would love to take with them, including the fireplace tiles and a Winnie the Pooh wall quote that holds special meaning for their family.
"It's really just the way that they build stuff, it's the attention to detail, I think that's what we appreciated the most," Shane reflected, particularly noting the handmade doors. "These are things that most people aren't looking for. And you're like when you know it's there and you appreciate that it's not just from a factory." Their home stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of craftsmanship and the Arts and Crafts movement's philosophy that beauty lies in the careful attention to countless small details.
