A robust Glasgow building characterized by heavy steel beams and columns has undergone a dramatic transformation into the Kloud Cafe-Bar, featuring cloud-inspired design elements with billowing walls and radiant lighting effects. Located at 78 Hutcheson Street, the renovated space wraps the original hard edges and raw industrial structure in rounded, textured plaster to create an adaptive environment that appears bright and airy during daytime hours, then transitions to warm amber tones in the evening.

The innovative renovation was developed by Kidz, a Dutch experimental design studio that created the fluffy, cloud-like environment by incorporating arched openings and flowing windows specifically chosen for their fluid visual qualities. The design team used decorative plaster treatments to distinguish different areas within the space, ranging from rough and tactile finishes in the main hall to smoother applications in the service areas, creating varied textures throughout the cafe.

Concealed lighting systems played a crucial role in achieving the desired atmospheric effects, with ceiling fixtures designed to simulate God rays piercing through clouds in the sky above. The lighting installation facilitates the dramatic transition from day to night operations, utilizing lightboxes and round luminous spheres that shift their color output from bright daylight tones to orange and red hues as evening approaches.

Two additional rooms feature mirrors strategically embedded into window reveals, a design choice that creates the illusion of expanded space and enhances the overall sense of openness. The studio complemented these visual effects with poured flooring and porcelain stoneware materials, accented by stainless steel elements that introduce reflections and create dancing patterns of sunbeams throughout the interior.

The furniture selection reinforces the unconventional design approach, with custom pieces including an elongated sofa and specially designed tables that accommodate both large groups and individual patrons. According to the design studio, "Kidz avoided decorative excess, focusing instead on architecture, geometry, and light."

The project's centerpiece is an internal window that serves a dual function of both dividing and uniting the overall space. This architectural element became the focal point of the entire renovation, creating what the designers describe as "a minimalist interior that gently resonates with the historic context of the building and unfolds through different scenarios—from daytime café to evening bar."
