The ongoing transformation of Chicago's Thompson Center into Google's new headquarters in The Loop has reached a significant milestone, with the installation of new glass panels continuing to wrap around the building's structural framework. The Prime Group is currently renovating the former state office building under an agreement to sell the completed structure to Google, which plans to relocate employees to the facility next year.
The renovation project has made substantial progress since March, when work had just begun on the glass installation and a permit was issued to renovate the CTA station connected to the building. Nearly six months later, the west and north façades are now mostly complete, featuring a large expanse of new windows facing the prominent intersection of Randolph and Clark Streets. Construction crews are actively working to enclose the first floor of the building.
JAHN, the architectural firm that originally designed the Thompson Center, has also developed the renovation plans for the project. Clark Construction serves as both the general contractor and Construction Manager At Risk for the comprehensive redevelopment. The renovation maintains the building's iconic presence at the corner of Randolph and Clark Streets while modernizing it for Google's technological needs.
Photographic documentation shows the extensive progress across multiple façades of the building. The glass installation appears sporadic along Clark Street facing eastward, while the LaSalle Street side displays complete glass coverage. The northwest corner at Lake and LaSalle Streets demonstrates the scope of the exterior work, and the west façade shows the glass installation nearing completion.
The project represents a significant investment in Chicago's downtown Loop district, bringing one of the world's largest technology companies to a renovated landmark building. With Google's planned move-in scheduled for next year, the Thompson Center renovation stands as a major urban redevelopment initiative that preserves architectural heritage while adapting it for modern corporate use.
