The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz art museum has extended its operating hours in response to overwhelming visitor demand for its major exhibition "Edvard Munch. Fear." Museum officials announced that more than 37,000 visitors have attended the exhibition at its halfway point, prompting the decision to accommodate larger crowds.
Starting this past weekend, the exhibition is now open on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Beginning October 14, these extended hours will also apply to weekdays when the museum is open. On October 15, the exhibition will remain open until 7:30 p.m. to further accommodate the high visitor interest.
The exhibition project "Edvard Munch. Fear" focuses on the emotions of anxiety and loneliness through works by the renowned Norwegian artist. The presentation is enhanced with self-portraits, social scenes, figures seen from behind, and landscapes. The display also features works by Munch's contemporaries as well as contemporary artistic pieces that dialogue with his themes.
Among the notable pieces on display is Munch's famous 1895 lithograph "The Scream," widely considered the Norwegian artist's most recognizable work. The Chemnitz exhibition also demonstrates Munch's lasting influence on other artists, including American pop artist Andy Warhol's adaptation of "The Scream." The show presents 90 works from both Munch and international art stars, making it one of the major highlights of Chemnitz's year as European Capital of Culture 2025.
The exhibition runs until November 2 and represents a significant cultural achievement for Chemnitz during its designation as a European Capital of Culture. The unprecedented visitor numbers reflect the exhibition's success in bringing world-class art to the German city and highlighting the enduring relevance of Munch's exploration of human emotions and psychological states.
