At 84 years old, Margit Christann could easily be enjoying retirement, but instead she spends her Friday mornings working as a volunteer at the Bremen Art Museum shop. The dedicated volunteer has been contributing her time to the museum for an impressive 24 years, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to arts and culture in her community.
"Wait, I need to straighten something here that's bothering me," Christann says mid-conversation, walking over to a shelf where several art catalogs have fallen over. "Much better," she remarks after a few quick adjustments, nodding approvingly toward the bookshelf. Her attention to detail reflects how seriously she takes her volunteer position, despite it being unpaid work.
Christann's dedication to the Bremen Art Museum spans nearly a quarter-century, coinciding with the museum shop's own milestone celebration of its 40th anniversary this year. While she used to volunteer multiple times per week in earlier years, she has now settled into a regular Friday morning schedule that works well for both her and the museum staff.
The volunteer work extends beyond simple shop duties, as the museum shop team occasionally organizes small group excursions and activities. These outings have become an enjoyable part of Christann's volunteer experience, though they require some coordination with her personal life. "My husband somehow fits into all of this," Christann says with a laugh, indicating how her volunteer commitments have become integrated into her family routine.
Christann's story exemplifies the vital role that volunteers play in keeping cultural institutions running smoothly. Her long-term commitment to the Bremen Art Museum shop demonstrates how retirees can find meaningful purpose through community service, while simultaneously supporting the arts and helping visitors discover new cultural experiences.
