KATSEYE, a six-member girl group born from an innovative collaboration between South Korean entertainment giant HYBE and American record label Geffen Records, is emerging as a blueprint for the future of global pop music. The group, which first appeared on Netflix's 2023 survival show "The Debut: Dream Academy," represents a unique fusion of K-pop's rigorous training system with Western pop sensibilities, creating a sound that could define the next era of popular music.
The diverse lineup consists of members from around the world: Daniela from the Philippines, Lara from Switzerland, Manon from France, Megan from Hawaii, Sophia from the United States, and Yoonchae from Korea. This international composition brings a global perspective to every aspect of their artistry. "I think a gem that KATSEYE brings to the pop world is representation, empowerment, our powerful performance and showmanship. These are things we really value as a group and want to continue leveling up," Lara explained in an interview with The Korea Times.
The group's training experience combined the best elements from both Korean and Western music industries. Megan, who initially expected K-pop training to be "strict and rigid," discovered a different reality. "But I learned it's also about teamwork, creativity and supporting each other," she said, noting that the experience "pushed us to grow not just as artists, but as people, and to really learn from each other's cultures and perspectives." Korean member Yoonchae added that training in Los Angeles allowed KATSEYE to "combine the best of both worlds and take influences from both U.S. music and the K-pop industry."
Despite not being classified as a traditional K-pop group, KATSEYE members draw significant inspiration from established K-pop acts. "I draw a lot of inspiration from groups that coincidentally fall under the same company, like BTS, Le Sserafim, ENHYPEN and more," Sophia revealed. "BTS mainly was a big inspiration because of how they broke boundaries as Asian artists on a global scale. Their group dynamic and the messages they send through their music always inspired me."
Since their debut in 2023, KATSEYE has experienced remarkable success in the global music scene. The group achieved their first entry on Billboard's Hot 100 with their track "Gnarly," which they performed at Lollapalooza Chicago 2025. Their social media presence has exploded across platforms, amassing 6.1 million followers on Instagram, 11.4 million on TikTok, and 4 million on YouTube. In September, they won the MTV Push Performance of the Year award for their song "Touch" at the MTV Video Music Awards held at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
Their latest EP, "Beautiful Chaos," released in June, further establishes their unique position in the pop music landscape. "This EP feels super genuine to me, especially with 'Gabriela' – that one's really personal and shows a side of me people haven't really seen before," Daniela explained. The track features her singing a bridge in Spanish, showcasing her cultural background. "Overall, it's just us being ourselves. Loud, messy, emotional, but in a way that's still beautiful."
Managing sudden fame and intense spotlight has presented challenges for the young group, but they've found ways to stay grounded. "We've had so many new experiences this year, but what keeps us grounded is staying close as a group, supporting each other, and remembering why we started in the first place," Manon shared. "We also try to keep in touch with our families and make time for little normal things in life, so that even when everything is moving fast, we feel balanced."
Beyond their musical achievements, KATSEYE members recognize their role in inspiring future generations through representation. "Growing up, I really yearned for someone else who looked like me to make me feel like my career would be more possible. I decided that I need to become that person for other young aspiring artists, and I hope that our existence and works make them feel empowered and limitless," said Lara, who is of Tamil heritage.
KATSEYE represents just the beginning of this new global pop model. Geffen and HYBE are already preparing to launch a second international girl group in 2026. This upcoming four-member unit will feature Brazilian Samara Siqueira, Swedish member Lexie Levin, and American Emily Kelavos – all former contestants from "Dream Academy." Auditions for the fourth and final member are currently taking place in Japan in partnership with streaming service ABEMA. Additionally, HYBE recently announced plans to expand this model into India, reflecting chairman Bang Si-hyuk's broader vision to export K-pop methodologies worldwide and achieve market dominance by integrating local cultures and characteristics.
