The Bridge View Center campus in Ottumwa welcomed a spectacular new addition on October 22 with the installation of the "Eagle In Flight" metal sculpture. This impressive artwork, created by renowned artist Steve Huffman and his skilled team, represents a significant investment in the beautification and transformation of the facility that serves as an economic hub for the community.

Bridge View Center Executive Director Scott Hallgren expressed his enthusiasm for the new installation, stating that the sculpture "serves as a beacon of solidarity, freedom and hope for the Ottumwa community and Wapello County for years to come." The eagle sculpture stands as both an artistic achievement and a powerful symbol for the region.

The ambitious project began approximately one year ago through discussions and visionary planning within the BVC Beautification Committee. What started as conversations about enhancing the campus has culminated in a stunning piece of public art that will greet visitors and residents for generations to come. The committee worked diligently to bring this concept from initial inspiration to final installation.

The sculpture represents a substantial $100,000 investment in the Bridge View Center campus and Wapello County infrastructure. Remarkably, the entire project was funded through the generous support of the community, with all necessary funds coming from gifts, grants, and donations. Local families, individual contributors, and several organizations stepped forward to make this artistic vision a reality.

To honor the contributors who made this project possible, a commemorative plaque has been installed on a rock positioned behind the sculpture. This recognition ensures that the donors' commitment to community beautification will be remembered alongside the artwork itself.

Executive Director Hallgren emphasized the strategic importance of the installation, noting that "Our BVC campus serves as an economic center for Ottumwa and Wapello County, and you only have one shot to make a great first impression." This perspective drove the Board and BVC Beautification Committee's commitment to creating something truly exceptional for their community.

The sculpture and surrounding landscaping project reflects the organization's broader mission to serve both visitors and local residents. Hallgren explained that the Board and Beautification Committee "wanted an amazing piece of art and landscaping to beautify Ottumwa and serve as a destination to gather and enjoy our community." The installation is designed to benefit not only the thousands of guests who visit Bridge View Center annually but also community and county residents who provide ongoing support.

Key members of the BVC Beautification Committee played crucial roles in bringing this project to fruition, including Ted Haas, Dianne Haas, and Connie Ferguson, who worked alongside artist Steve Huffman throughout the planning and installation process. Huffman, who specializes in both metal sculpture and landscape design and installation, created a piece that seamlessly integrates with the campus environment while making a bold artistic statement.
