A prominent landscape architecture practice has strengthened its Scottish operations by opening a new studio in Glasgow and appointing a regional director to lead the expansion. Newcastle-based OOBE has established its latest office in the historic Tontine Building located in Glasgow's Merchant City district, marking a significant expansion of the firm's presence north of the English border beyond its already established operations in Edinburgh.
Greg Meikle, a seasoned landscape architecture professional and former associate at LDA Design, has been appointed as regional director to spearhead the new Glasgow studio. Meikle, who brings 15 years of experience in landscape architecture, will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of major projects including the significant Yorkhill Quay development. His role will involve building extensive professional networks and relationships across both Glasgow and the broader Scottish region, working in close partnership with Chris Shiels, the firm's Edinburgh director.
Reflecting on his new position and the firm's mission, Meikle emphasized the deeper purpose behind landscape architecture work. "For me, landscape architecture is about connecting people and place through nature, creating environments that feel authentic and enduring," he explained. He also highlighted Glasgow's current development trajectory, noting that "Glasgow is at an exciting point in its evolution, with new investment redefining how people experience the city."
Oliver Smith, managing director at OOBE, praised the strategic appointment and outlined the firm's broader expansion goals. "Greg's appointment brings deep local experience, creative leadership and a shared passion for making places that endure," Smith stated. He emphasized how this Glasgow expansion fits into the company's overall growth strategy, adding, "Together with our Edinburgh, Birmingham and Newcastle studios, this move strengthens our ability to deliver high-quality, sustainable design across the UK."
The new Glasgow office in the Tontine Building will house additional key personnel beyond the regional director position. Senior landscape architect Alex Lewis and business development manager Kirstin Jackson will also be based at the new location, providing comprehensive professional services and local business development capabilities. This staffing structure demonstrates OOBE's commitment to establishing a substantial and well-resourced presence in Glasgow's competitive architectural and design market.
