The eighth Daejeon Special Visual Effects Film Festival will run across Daejeon from Sept. 17–19.

Organised by the Daejeon Metropolitan Government and the Daejeon Information and Culture Industry Promotion Agency, the festival will take place at DCC Exhibition Hall 2, Megabox Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science and four additional venues in the city.

This year’s official poster carries the phrase “Unreal on Real.” The program covers special cinematography and visual effects as well as production design, props, makeup and other technical areas involved in film and television production.

The festival will open on Sept. 17 with a red-carpet event and the DFX OTT Awards at DCC Exhibition Hall 2. Twelve awards will recognise technical work, performances and other achievements in screen content released during the past year.

The screening program has expanded from 11 films last year to 21 this year. Hur Jin Ho’s unreleased film “The Assassins” will be shown as the closing film ahead of its scheduled theatrical release on Sept. 23.

The DFX Tech Show will be held at Megabox Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science on Sept. 18 and 19. Under the theme “Making the Unreal Appear Real,” production designers Kim Bo Muk and Jung Sung Ho and makeup artist Pi Dae Sung will discuss their production experience and technical methods.

A project pitching section has also been introduced this year. Six projects were selected through an open call and will take part in presentations and one-on-one business meetings with industry representatives.

The six selected projects are “Jiha Ho,” “Gokdu: Wingbeat,” “May the Assemblyman Protect Us,” “I Dreamed My Parents Died,” “The End of Isaac” and “Cherry Boy.” A total of 100 million won will be awarded through the program.

By combining screenings and awards with technical exchange, project development and investment meetings, the festival is broadening its focus on the production infrastructure behind visual content.
